Job Description Summary :
The Academic Support Coordinator will develop and implement programs to enhance student learning and teach academic success strategies unique to the SMU health science education environment.
The Coordinator will organize and lead the Peer Tutoring Program on assigned campuses, consult with the academic departments and promote tutoring among students and faculty, develop and lead workshops and seminars that assist health science students to successfully learn, integrate, and apply complex material into the classroom and clinical setting, and counsel students to assess learning challenges and to assist with developing new learning strategies and techniques.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Academic Support
- Help administer campus-wide academic support program for students*.
- Teach and instruct students one-on-one, in small groups, and virtually on academic support and learning support strategies.
- Create and update academic support resource files both online and in hard copy for students.
- Serve as a resource for faculty and staff for questions and referrals.
- Refer students to peer tutor support and additional outside resources as necessary.
- Work individually with students to assess learning challenges and suggest new study and test-taking strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty working with at-risk students and assist with test-taking and study skills instruction.
Peer Tutoring
- Organize and lead a Peer Tutoring Program for all students in assigned campuses.
- Regularly recruit and train Peer Tutors and Tutor Coordinators, assess the program, and maintain data for quality control and statistical purposes.
Co-curricular Programming
- Design, develop and present a variety of Academic Success workshops and seminars, based on the needs of the campuses, that promote student learning and test-taking strategies.
- Market and promote programs, track attendance, and assess learning.
- Collaborate with campus departments on potential co-sponsorships.
Other duties as assigned
Education and / or Experience :
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in education, healthcare, counseling or related field; Master’s preferred
- Three to four years of providing students with academic support, preferably in higher education
- Ability to develop training programs for students
- Experience in positions of increased responsibility in an academic and teaching environment
Skills and Abilities :
- Ability to exchange or express ideas through communication
- Ability to function in an atmosphere of frequently changing priorities
- Must exhibit tact, discretion, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work as a team player
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure and perform reconciliations
- Ability to create and conduct seminars and training workshops
- Excellent communication skills are required to quickly organize and communicate thoughts
- Skills in writing concise, logical, and grammatically correct materials
- Ability to use a personal computer
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
- Excellent attention to details
- Ability to handle multiple priorities
- Ability to travel to multiple campuses
