Department of Biochemistry

Gates Laboratory

Postdoctoral Position in Metabolism and Chromatin Biology

Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA

JOB SUMMARY

The laboratory of Dr. Leah Gates in the Department of Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has postdoctoral positions available to study the regulation of chromatin and gene expression through metabolism.

Specific projects include but are not limited to studying mechanisms of metabolite signaling to chromatin, the regulation of intestinal cell fate through chromatin, and how the intersection of metabolism and chromatin is disrupted in cancer.

The Gates lab utilizes mouse models, both 2D and 3D cell culture models, and molecular biology assays to answer key questions about chromatin biology, with a focus on the mammalian intestine.

We are looking for curious and dedicated researchers to join our highly collaborative and supportive team. In addition to carrying out research, support will be available for career development, presenting research findings at national and international conferences, student mentorship, and scientific outreach.

I. SCIENTIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The candidate will use a combination of techniques and models including mouse models, both 2D and 3D cell culture models, and molecular biology assays, to investigate questions related to the intersection of metabolism, chromatin, and gene regulation.

The lab aims to discover how metabolite signaling to chromatin impacts cell and tissue function in health and disease.

This candidate will independently plan and conduct experiments to accomplish research objectives and will have an opportunity to develop new and independent research projects that leverage the lab's expertise in chromatin biology, metabolism, and intestinal cell biology.

The successful candidate will keep organized scientific records, and conduct themselves with high scientific integrity, respect for others, and a willingness to learn.

They will present data at lab meetings, lab journal clubs, departmental seminars and scientific meetings. They will also prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals.

II. TECHNICAL SKILLS

Required skills : In-depth experience with standard molecular biology techniques and either cell culture-based assays or extensive experience working with mice.

Preferred skills : Experience with intestinal organoid tissue culture, expertise in chromatin biology and / or gene regulation, next generation sequencing (NGS) data analyses.

III. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise laboratory technicians / assistants and graduate student trainees in experimental design and data analysis of a variety of projects.

IV. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have : (1) a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D. / Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field; (2) a strong background in molecular biology, and / or metabolism, and / or experience working with the intestine;

3) published in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.

The successful candidate must have strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills.

Interested candidates should send a current CV, a 1-page cover letter describing current and future research interests, and names and contact information for 3 references to : Dr.

Leah Gates, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at [email protected].
