Under the general direction of the Building Official and the direct supervision of the Senior Building Inspector, the Part-Time Building Inspector performs physical field inspections of structures, including foundations, framing, roofs, gas and refrigeration systems, and electrical wiring. The position certifies that inspected structures conform to the city's adopted building codes. It involves interpreting building codes and has the authority to halt construction if violations are observed. The inspector reviews and checks routine building plans and issues permits. The role requires inspecting commercial and other construction developments within the city.
This recruitment is open on a continuous basis until filled. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply early. This is a part-time, as-needed position, not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of experience as a building inspector, journeyman, or contractor, or a combination thereof in the building construction field. High school diploma or equivalent, preferably supplemented by courses in architecture, engineering, building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical fields.
License & Other Requirements
Possession and maintenance of Certification as a Building Inspector and a valid California Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
Work is performed both in an office and outdoors, with exposure to elements. Uses a computer, hand tools, probes, and drives a vehicle. Must meet physical requirements for mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing, and dexterity necessary for inspections, including climbing stairs and ladders, working in confined spaces, and walking on uneven surfaces. Exposure to noise, chemicals, dust, electrical hazards, and traffic is possible.
Exempt / Non-Exempt
This is a non-exempt position. Overtime is paid at one and one-half times the hourly rate for hours exceeding 40 per week.
Background Check / Physical Exam
Employment requires passing a background check and medical exam, conducted at the City's expense. Candidates are advised not to resign from current employment until passing these checks and receiving a final offer.
