This dynamic company supports the other UIC Subsidiaries as well as maintains its own project work. This position is expected to interface heavily with our clients and develop new opportunities.

The Associate Scientist is expected to provide project management as well as project support for other staff. Our projects range from the oil and gas sector to infrastructure development to planning.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include :

  • Comprehensive environmental consulting and / or engineering includes planning, data assessment, reporting, overseeing field personnel, travel, fieldwork, and / or sample collection.
  • Perform Phase I, II, & III Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Review, evaluate, and interpret environmental data and prepare summary reports.
  • Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels in a professional manner.
  • Enters confined spaces to clean the interior of tanks, trenches, drains, oil / water separators, boilers, etc., to remove liquids, solids, and residue utilizing different methods such as scraping, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, squeegees, and shoveling.
  • Performs physical labor associated with cleanup and remediation activities such as sample collection, drum pumping, drum handling, waste bulking, and hand and mechanical demolition.
  • Responds to customer spills and emergencies during and after normal business hours.
  • Performs inspections on containers, and collection areas, and ensure all is in compliance, labeled and sealed properly.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, pumps, pressure washers, generators, electric pallet jacks, forklifts, bobcats, etc.
  • Receive, review, prepare, and sign shipping documents.
  • Convert shipping documents.
  • Audit / perform checks on employees and procedures.
  • Writing work instructions and SOPs
  • Track manifest submittal to generators / EPA.
  • Conduct waste characterization sampling, including hazard categorization of unknown substances in drums and other containers with field testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications

Preferred / Required Experience :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or other Natural Science or equivalent experience / certifications.
  • At least 5 years of experience
  • Contribute to various projects in environmental assessment and remediation, hazardous materials management, health and safety oversight, engineering, and natural resource planning and permitting, plus profile, manifest, and coordinate shipping of hazardous and regulated wastes.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, ArcGIS, AutoCAD
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Meet the requirements of an Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Qualified Environmental Professional, as defined by 18 Alaska Administrative Code 75.333
  • Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA and other federal regulations.
  • Experience sampling soil, groundwater, and other media at contaminated sites.
  • Experience in hazardous waste and hazardous materials management.
  • Experience with environmental remediation technologies.
  • Experience on federal projects (HTRW, TERC, AFCEE, etc.).
  • Travel and year-round field work, with working hours more than 40 per week and weekends as needed.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills required to effectively interact with clients and staff at all levels.
  • Must be personable, flexible, and professional.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver license and insurable driving record.
  • This position requires critical thinking and analysis; frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting and carrying 30+ pounds;

working in all weather conditions; field visits per project needs; ability to travel (drive or fly) to and from job sites locally and out of state 40-hour HAZWOPER training

Experience with planning, logistics, and fieldwork in remote locations.

Authorized Driver Requirement : Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.
