Job Description Summary

The University Counseling Center is seeking applicants for a 12-month, full-time postdoctoral fellowship to begin August 1, 2024 through July 31, 2025.

The postdoctoral fellowship is designed for an individual who is seeking licensure and is interested in advanced training in a university counseling center.

The primary responsibilities of the Fellow include individual and group therapy, intake interviews, crisis intervention, and outreach and consultation to students, faculty, and staff.

The position is full-time, 12 months.

Job Description

Essential Functions :

  • Provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, group and individual psychotherapy, consultation and other mental health services within the University Counseling Center.
  • Provides individual and group counseling / therapy using a brief-therapy model for students at the University.
  • Conducts psychological assessments and formulates treatment plans in the assessment and diagnosis of students.
  • Provides a variety of outreach and consultative services to students, staff, and other campus community members.
  • Assesses levels of risk and intervenes in crisis situations; makes appropriate level of care decisions and referrals.
  • Conducts crisis assessment and intervention for urgent / walk-in appointments.
  • Makes decisions regarding referral of clients to outside agencies.
  • Provides consultation and professional advice to all members of the University community.
  • Documents and maintains confidential records in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Provides didactic training, consultation, and clinical supervision to UCC graduate trainees in psychology and counseling.
  • Provides after-hours on-call crisis counseling on a rotating basis.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities :

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited institution of higher education, which includes the completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • Due to the nature of this postdoctoral position and psychology practice laws in North Carolina, the individual who accepts this position must apply for licensure in North Carolina and sit for the Examination of Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) during the post-doctoral year.
  • Experience with and / or strong interest in student mental health agencies or relevant healthcare or social service settings.
  • Qualified candidates should have strong clinical skills in counseling, psychological assessment and crisis management.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential.
  • A strong understanding of professional ethics and boundaries, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must.

Preferred Education and Experience :

  • Knowledge of psychological theories, assessment tools, treatment planning, and student development.
  • Specialized training and / or experience with a specialized student population is strongly preferred.
