African Library Project is dedicated to expanding opportunities by creating spaces that nurture literacy. We create and improve small libraries in African communities that have had limited access to literary materials. Since 2005, our organization as has established over 3,400 libraries in schools and communities across 13 African countries. That’s over 3.6 million books! We are a growing non-profit guided by values of partnership, involvement and sustainability. We currently work in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Uganda. African Library Project is proud to partner with outstanding organizations and individuals who are dedicated to promoting literacy and library development in Africa. In the United States and Canada, volunteers organize book drives and raise funds to ship the books overseas. Once those books are gathered and mailed, African Library Project relies on a network of dedicated partners within Africa to get them to each community – no matter how far. In addition to selecting and vetting each library recipient, our trusted partners provide training on how to set up and run a library in a rural community. Together, we evaluate the use of our libraries, measure our impact and share in developing best practices. Overview

The African Library Project (ALP) advances literacy by creating and improving small libraries in schools and communities across Sub-Saharan Africa. As a Board Member, you’ll provide strategic guidance, governance, and leadership to help ALP grow its impact and sustainability.

The Board of Directors is ALP’s highest leadership and governance body. Board members set the mission and strategic objectives, select and support the Executive Director, ensure strong fundraising and resource development, approve and monitor programs, safeguard sound governance and compliance, and enhance ALP’s public image. Individually, members are expected to know ALP’s mission and programs, review and understand financial statements, serve as advocates and ambassadors, help secure resources, prepare for and participate fully in meetings, and serve on at least one committee.

Our Board is made up of committed professionals who share a passion for books, literacy, education, and global development. We are dedicated to expanding diversity at every level of the organization and to building inclusive processes that value dialogue and partnership with our African colleagues. Board members may reside anywhere in the world, provided they can fully participate in meetings and responsibilities.

We are currently seeking candidates with expertise in

• Fundraising & Development (major gifts, foundations, and corporate partnerships)
• International law
• Peace Corps experience (Returned Peace Corps Volunteers / RPCVs)
• Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) affiliation
• Native to Africa and / or with lived experience on the continent
