Department / Location : Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center / Tucson, AZ

Primary Function : Under the direction of the Bishop and administrative direction of the Moderator of the Curia is responsible for the financial management of the Diocese of Tucson and the stewardship of fiscal resources in support of the mission and goals of the diocese.

As an ecclesiastical office mandated by Canon Law, this position oversees all financial and related functions including budgeting, accounting, and investments.

The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his / her personal life, Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received. (Eph. 4 : 1)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Perform in support of the Church and the Diocese’s spiritual and pastoral mission.
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employee’s professional and private life and shall govern his / her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral strictures.
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate, manage, organize, implement, and perform with effectiveness, timeliness, accuracy, and attention to detail, the fiscal administration of the diocese within the framework of Catholic Doctrine and Catholic principles of morality.
  • Research and secure liability and other insurance providers as necessary; manage the insurance portfolio, including claims;

prepare insurance certificates.

  • Set an example for employees by personal adherence to and compliance with personnel and other diocesan policies and procedures.
  • Analyze and make recommendations on all major financial decisions and questions in the diocese, its parishes, and other affiliated entities.
  • Serve as staff to and work in collaboration with the diocesan finance council and other consultative bodies established by the Bishop.
  • Oversee the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget; be proactive and make recommendations as to available resources and financial limitations.
  • Implement and evaluate financial policies and practices of the diocese to ensure financial goals and objectives are met in accordance with canon law, policies established by the Bishop, and governmental regulations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for diocesan administrative offices, diocesan management, finance council, and appropriate external organizations as necessary.
  • Oversee diocesan financial programs including the accounting function for accounts receivable, loans, deposits, and accounts payable.
  • Ensure completion of the annual internal audit process in conjunction with an internal auditor and outside accounting firm.
  • Manage finance department personnel in accordance with applicable employment related laws and diocesan personnel policies practices and procedures.
  • Oversee the investment of the diocesan portfolio, retirement, and deposit and loan finds, being constantly aware of any potential losses.
  • Engage and interact with legal counsel on diocesan financial affairs.
  • Assist in reviewing all contracts, trusts, deeds, affidavits, and other legal documents as required.
  • Maintain a diocesan presence on various committees and boards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical / Mental Requirements : Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment.

Required Activities : Walking, sitting standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and keyboarding.

Basic Qualifications :

  • A working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church; must also be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Excellent communications skills including written, verbal, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter and be well-organized; must be a team player.
  • Be able to travel and be available for evening and weekend work as necessary; have reliable transportation.
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology including word processing and the use of excel and related technology; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies and adapt appropriately in a ministerial environment.
  • The ability to successfully complete a criminal history and background check.
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Education and Experience :
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; an advanced degree in a business-related field; or certification as a Public Accountant
  • Ten plus years of professional experience with multiple responsibilities in leadership positions in accounting or finance
  • Administrative leadership experience in a non-profit organization, to include experience working with consultative bodies, supervision, accounting, investing, borrowing, and business law;

knowledge of properties, employee benefits, risk management, insurance, and computer systems is required.

  • Advance knowledge of budgeting principles and practices (including proficiency in the use of spreadsheet software), accounting principles, investments, and financial reporting methodologies.
  • Experience in planning is desired.

Other Skills and Abilities :

Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
