POSITION SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator I performs semi-skilled labor involving the operation of light vehicles, machinery, and hand and power tools in street repair, maintenance and construction.

Work performed is physical in nature and is performed under severe working conditions. The Equipment Operator I performs manual labor and basic equipment operation as part of a work crew in the maintenance, repair and construction of city streets and related infrastructure.

It is a requirement of this position to work overtime and be on call for emergency work.

Reports to : Concrete Utility & Street Maintenance Manager

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Maintains existing roadways, alleyways, storm drains, ditches and city facilities through the use of machinery, hand and power tools and the operation of basic construction equipment.

Operates tandem axel dump trucks, snow plows, spreaders. graders, plate compactors, asphalt rollers, small rollers, concrete saws, crack sealers, back pack blowers gas and electric powered equipment and hand tools.

Removes debris and weeds from alleys, trims trees and limbs, hauls road base and other necessary materials from asphalt, sand or gravel facilities, and transport to job site including occasional mountain driving to haul and stockpile supply of materials used for routine maintenance.

Performs daily CDL pre- and post-trip vehicle safety inspections, records information in a vehicle inspection log, in order to identify safety issues.

Reports mechanical problems for shop repair.

Completes necessary paperwork at end of shift, regarding work orders completed.

Collects trash from containers on major city corridors to insure safety for citizens and cleanliness of City property.

Operates backhoe and street sweeper occasionally or on a training basis to maintain existing roads and alleyways.

Removes ice and snow from streets operating snowplow trucks, sanders, front-end loaders and motor graders to assist in the safe flow of traffic.

Cleans roadways after storms using street sweepers to avoid and deter safety hazards associated with public travel.

Paints barricades and bridges to assist in safety of citizens, keep bridges from rusting and eliminate excessive repair.

Sets up traffic control devices, and flags traffic.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Installs new manholes and storm drainage systems, by use of cement mixer, backhoe and shovel, for the prevention of flooding and to facilitate proper drainage.

Assists other departments in completion of tasks they are not equipped to perform.

Performs other duties as assigned and required.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education : High School completed or GED preferred

Work Experience : Minimum 1 year of construction work, asphalt work, or equipment operation

Certifications and / or Licensures : None

Required Driver’s License : Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 3 months of hire

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Working knowledge of :

  • Construction equipment operating procedures
  • Operate 5- and 10- yard dump trucks
  • Asphalt patching and paving
  • Safety procedures
  • Snow Plow Equipment and Operations

Familiar with :

  • Construction industry
  • Traffic control
  • Minor equipment maintenance and repair

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, dust, fumes, street traffic and materials used in street maintenance such as asphalt products.

Work is very physical in nature and requires a great amount of physical exertion in extreme conditions while working with material that exceeds 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Work may be performed near moving machinery, moving mechanical parts and in heavy traffic.

Sufficient physical stamina and strength is required to safely perform the following :

  • Push / pulling of up to 75lbs of force; lifting floor to shoulder of up to 85lbs; lifting shoulder to overhead of up to 50lbs; carrying up to 85lbs
  • Occasionally stand, climb stairs, bend for periods of time, reach overhead, crawl, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, balance, use fine motor skills and manipulation, use near acuity and color vision and frequently stoop
  • Constantly sit, walk, squat, handle tools or other equipment, hear, use far acuity, depth perception and peripheral vision.
