Lead Registered Veterinary Technician (Sign on Bonus!)

SUMMARY

Contributes to Columbus Humane's mission and vision by providing clinical support to Veterinarians and supervision of the veterinary support staff as necessary to ensure high quality of services and care for at-risk animals served at Columbus Humane Essential Care Center.

The Lead Registered Veterinary Technician provides supervision over the clinical lab instructors and students enrolled in the Rachel Ray Foundation Pathways to Careers in Animal Health veterinary assistant training program.

The Lead Registered Veterinary Technician performs a wide range of administrative activities related to quality patient care and excellent client service, marketing and promotion of services, and discretionary activities, that serve to support effective business operations as well as the operations of the veterinary clinic.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Thinks, communicates, and acts in the best interest of Columbus Humane and our human and animal clients at all times; models our mission and values in all job-related functions.
• Primary responsibility for assisting with surgery, dentistry, and preventative medical care for animals served at Columbus Humane Essential Care Center including diagnostics and medical recordkeeping.
• Creates and supports open dialogue with clients, takes patient histories, explains medications, vaccinations, and go-home procedures with clients.

Answers questions and makes referrals to other Columbus Humane programs and services as necessary.

• Works extensively with Pathways to Careers in Animal Health lab instructors and students. Ensures a supportive and engaging learning environment.
• Supervision of clinical lab instructors in creating and implementing necessary documents, lesson plans, lab instructions, and other learning materials.
• Works with Veterinary Clinic Administrator (VCA) and lab instructors to schedule clinical lab sessions and appointments in Columbus Humane Essential Care Center.
• Works with VCA, Programs Manager, lab instructors, and partner organizations and businesses to facilitate on the job training placement for veterinary assistant students.
• Ability to work independently without ongoing direct supervision.
• Works with staff veterinarians and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine fourth year veterinary students to ensure a supportive and engaging learning environment.
• Monitors and reports changes or concerns in animal health or behavior to Veterinarians, and Director of Clinical Support as needed.
• Administers vaccinations and treatments for healthy, sick, and injured animals as necessary.
• Supports veterinarian with animal restraint and handling.
• Cleans, sanitizes, and disinfects animal living environments as necessary.
• Follows proper safety protocols for people and animals and sets a high standard for quality animal handling.
• Actively supports staff and volunteers and promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.

Always represents Columbus Humane in a professional and courteous manner. Provides quality service to clients, students, and staff recognizing their individual contribution to the success of our organization.

• Assists with pharmaceutical inventory management, monitoring, ordering, and control as necessary.
• Engages in safe, responsible, and legal handling, use, and recording of controlled substances.
• Make certain all necessary logs are kept up to date through established protocols; surgical, narcotic, radiology, and laboratory.
• Contribute to the maintenance of a comfortable, clean, and safe environment of which clients, the staff and the management can be proud.
• Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Clinical Support.
• Other duties as assigned.
• In charge of pharmaceutical inventory management, monitoring, ordering, and control as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervises and leads the technical staff with a positive, can-do attitude daily.
• Training, educating, and continued development of all Columbus Humane Essential Care Center technicians and assistants.
• Directing traffic in hospital, i.e. patient care, treatments, and staff duties daily. Oversees process of patient admitting, hospitalization, and discharge.
• Mentor technical staff in nursing care, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, laboratory and pharmacy.
• Modify and update systems and procedures wherever needed to better serve clients, patients, the practice, and employees, i.

e., modify schedules for the most productive use of time.

• Produces monthly schedules for all technicians and assistants.
• Works closely with the Director of Clinical Support to always ensure adequate staff coverage.
• Supervision of Rachel Ray foundation Pathways to Careers in Animal Health program including clinical lab instruction.
• Plan, organize and effectively lead quarterly team meetings, annual reviews and monthly one on one's.
• Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once, and deal with stressful situations in an environment of changing priorities.
• Must have strong medical skills and the ability to motivate technical staff.
• Supervision of students and interns as needed.
• Goal oriented.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a registered Veterinary Technician with demonstrated experience in animal care and handling.
• Practice experience of at least 2 years as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
• Experience in teaching desired.
• Experience with Microsoft Office necessary.

• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.
• Must be able to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written direction.

• Dependable attendance is required.
• Any allergies to animals must be controllable through medication.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a normal veterinary clinic setting including exposure to hazardous chemicals and potential exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.

We are hiring for a Monday-Friday role, $28.00 per hour based on previous experience and education, and a $1,000 sign on bonus.
