Grounds Worker - Parks Refuse

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates that have a passion for providing exceptional customer service and a commitment to serving others. The Grounds Worker - Parks Refuse position will focus on providing exceptional experiences for our park patrons by serving as a member of the Refuse and Recycling unit. Incumbent will assist with City park properties and refuse disposal. About You : The ideal candidate for the Grounds Worker - Parks Refuse position will be a reliable, safety-conscious, and customer-focused individual with strong communication skills and a solid work ethic. They should be team-oriented, with a passion for parks and community service. A valid NC Class "C" driver's license is required, along with the ability to operate park maintenance equipment and perform preventative maintenance. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to high-quality work, safety standards, and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from supervisor.
  • Inspects materials and sorts items into bins according to type approved for recycling.
  • Loads recyclable materials into recycling truck. Places waste material barrels onto lifter and operates lever to dump contents. Loads yard waste into rear loader vehicles. Assists Maintenance Technician with backing the vehicle into refuse / recycling areas.
  • Operates compaction refuse truck and flatbed dump trucks collecting solid waste and recycling from City parks and facilities.
  • Loads park facility and roadside trash onto truck, and delivers refuse to landfill.
  • Inspects trash containers and repairs as needed.
  • Assists City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations which may require working extended hours during these events.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience : High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; Less than 1 year experience in groundskeeping, maintenance or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and / or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licensing and Certifications : Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Knowledge Of : General parks sanitation maintenance and servicing, organization policies; Tools and equipment required to perform the position; Occupational hazards and safety principles and practices; Park and City policies and regulations

Skill In : The safe operation of power tools and power equipment; Attention to detail; Customer service

Ability To : Utilize a computer for work order processing and use a City phone; Communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public; Collaborate with other city departments to complete tasks; Follow directions and meet work quality standards

ADA and Other Requirements : Work Environment and Physical Effort : Medium : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed in an outdoor and office environment, street environment (near moving traffic) and in or around vehicles. Employees may occasionally work on a construction site, in a warehouse environment, and shop environment. Work Exposures : There is occasional exposure to individuals who are hostile or irate, Extreme cold (below 32 degrees), Extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances moving mechanical parts, and loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
