Asset Accountant I Or II

The Accounting Unit of the Legislative Counsel Bureau (LCB) is seeking a diverse pool of qualified applicants for the position of Asset Accountant I or II within the Administrative Division. The LCB is a nonpartisan, legislative service agency that provides professional, technical and administrative support to the Nevada Legislature, which convenes biennially in odd-numbered years for 120-day sessions and for special sessions that occur during the interim periods. The Accounting Unit is responsible for providing technical accounting services to the LCB. This is a full-time position located in Carson City, Nevada. This recruitment will be used to fill one vacancy at either the Asset Accountant I or II level, depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Accountant, the Asset Accountant I or II will be responsible for managing fixed assets by collaborating with other departments within the LCB. Responsibilities of the Asset Accountant I or II may include, without limitation:

  • Working with LCB divisions, units and departments to obtain and verify inventories of fixed assets;
  • Reconciling the inventories of fixed assets to the records in the fixed asset module in Tyler ERP PRO 10 accounting software, and update the Tyler ERP PRO 10 records accordingly;
  • Preparing disposal entries monthly and processing correction entries, as needed;
  • Processing asset transfer and deletion requests on an on-going basis;
  • Collecting relevant data and preparing entries related to construction in progress, leases, financed purchases and subscription-based IT arrangements, in accordance with the relevant GASB statements;
  • Calculating depreciation and preparing interim and annual financial statements for fixed assets in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles;
  • Auditing routine transactions and resolving discrepancies;
  • Reviewing, updating and providing recommendations for new policies and procedures related to the accounting for fixed assets, and assisting in new implementations, as needed;
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with appropriate support staff of LCB divisions, units and departments and providing exceptional customer service and support, including, without limitation. addressing accounting-related questions and assisting with asset-related matters, as needed;
  • Understanding the goals and objectives of assigned tasks and informing the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accountant of progress or problems;
  • Keeping abreast of new accounting standards and LCB projects, changes or developments impacting financials; and
  • Performing other duties, as assigned.

Asset Accountant II will perform all duties described for Asset Accountant I; administer and track pre-paid expenses, inventory and other assets; develop proficiencies in all areas of accounting services through cross-training with team members; provide backup support to other accounting staff and perform general administrative duties, as needed; and perform other duties as assigned.

The Asset Accountant I or II will be selected with special preference given to the candidate's training, experience and aptitude in the field of business accounting. A qualified candidate must have:

  • Asset Accountant I: (1) a minimum of an associate's degree in accounting or other closely related field; and (2) at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in the accounting profession, including a minimum of 1 year of experience in fixed assets. A combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements may be considered.
  • Asset Accountant II: (1) a minimum of an associate's degree in accounting or other closely related field; and (2) at least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in the accounting profession, including a minimum of 2 years of experience in fixed assets. A Bachelor's degree in accounting or other closely related field is preferred. A combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements may be considered.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment;
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP);
  • A strong understanding of statutory and regulatory fiscal compliance standards;
  • The ability to understand and apply governmental accounting practices;
  • Experience using accounting-related computer programs and software;
  • The ability to operate various office machines and tools such as a computer, adding machine, printer and keyboard;
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Effective leadership abilities, including effective team management and strategic decision-making;
  • The ability to identify and assess problems and the resourcefulness and initiative to problem-solve and operate strategically;
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to effectively multitask;
  • The capability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work efficiently under stressful conditions; and
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of documents and communications.

The annual salary for this position is based upon a Grade 38 or 40, depending on experience and position level, with the following salary ranges under the employee/employer-paid retirement option.

Grade 38 (Asset Accountant I): $73,309 to $109,640

Grade 40 (Asset Accountant II): $80,053 to $120,122

An employer-paid contribution plan is also available with a reduced salary in lieu of an employee contribution. Actual starting salary will be based on experience and position level.

The work is performed in a typical office environment. Overtime may be required during legislative sessions and certain other periods as necessary to meet the demands of the Legislature. When overtime is worked, the Asset Accountant I or II may earn compensatory time that can be taken at a later date or be paid for the overtime, consistent with the LCB Rules and Policies and subject to budgetary limits.
