Clinical Director (RN) Hospice | California

Our confidential client is seeking an experienced and compassionate Clinical Director (Registered Nurse) to lead its clinical team and oversee the delivery of exceptional hospice care. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, staff development, and the highest quality of patient-centered care. The ideal candidate is an accomplished hospice leader who combines strong clinical expertise with proven management skills and a passion for mentoring teams while ensuring patients and families receive compassionate end-of-life care. POSITION OVERVIEW

The Clinical Director is responsible for the overall management and oversight of the hospice nursing department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and compassionate patient care. Working closely with physicians, interdisciplinary team members, and executive leadership, the Clinical Director provides guidance, mentorship, and operational oversight while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous quality improvement. This individual plays a critical role in supporting clinical staff, maintaining regulatory compliance, and promoting excellence throughout all aspects of hospice operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clinical Leadership
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the hospice nursing department, ensuring exceptional patient care and clinical excellence.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop nursing staff through coaching, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, patient-centered culture focused on compassion, accountability, and quality outcomes.
  • Schedule and manage nursing staff to ensure appropriate clinical coverage and operational efficiency.
  • Patient Care & Quality
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans in collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Promote the delivery of compassionate hospice care that supports the physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and families.
  • Conduct regular clinical documentation reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation, California state regulations, HIPAA requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and personnel information.
  • Promote resident and patient rights while fostering a respectful, ethical, and compassionate care environment.
  • Maintain survey readiness and support successful regulatory and accreditation reviews.
  • Staff Development
  • Develop and facilitate education and training programs to strengthen clinical knowledge, documentation practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Promote best practices in hospice nursing, patient care, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Support employee engagement, retention, and leadership development initiatives.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A strong commitment to hospice philosophy and patient-centered care.
  • Minimum of three years of healthcare management or hospice leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing clinical teams.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hospice regulations, documentation standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with hospice electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • A collaborative leadership style focused on excellence and continuous improvement.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Current, unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) license.
    • Minimum of three years of healthcare management experience.
    • Thorough understanding of hospice philosophy and end-of-life care.
    • Experience utilizing hospice EMR systems.
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of all patient and personnel information.
    • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and sound clinical judgment.
