1. Enhanced Job Description Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Backend Modernization Engineer to design, develop, modernize, and support enterprise applications using Java 21, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
The ideal candidate possesses strong hands-on backend development experience, understands modern distributed application architectures, and can transform existing applications into scalable, maintainable, container-ready services.
This position requires a combination of software engineering expertise, application modernization experience, technical problem-solving, and collaboration with business and technology stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
-
Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications using Java 21 and Spring Boot.
-
Architect and implement microservices-based solutions emphasizing scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
-
Modernize legacy applications and migrate existing functionality into modern backend services.
-
Develop reusable software components, application frameworks, libraries, and APIs.
-
Implement application containerization using Docker and Kubernetes technologies.
-
Collaborate with development teams and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
-
Participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
-
Develop and improve automated build, testing, and release processes.
-
Troubleshoot complex application problems and implement sustainable engineering solutions.
-
Establish best practices for application modernization, containerization, and backend development.
Required Technical Skills
-
Java 21: Strong hands-on Java development experience, preferably including Java 21 in enterprise applications.
-
Spring Boot: Demonstrated experience developing production backend services and REST APIs using Spring Boot.
-
Microservices: Experience designing, implementing, testing, and supporting distributed microservices architectures.
-
Software Engineering: Strong understanding of application architecture, software development lifecycles, unit testing, integration testing, and production troubleshooting.
-
Experience: At least five years of relevant software engineering experience.
Additional Qualifications
-
Docker and Kubernetes application containerization.
-
AWS infrastructure and cloud deployment experience.
-
Familiarity with Backbase APIs.
-
CI/CD pipeline development and automation.
-
Application refactoring and legacy modernization.
-
Experience designing reusable frameworks and service integrations.
Important calibration distinction: Docker, Kubernetes, and Backbase appear in the qualifications, but the client's explicitly designated must-have skills are Java 21, Spring Boot, and microservices. AWS is explicitly nice-to-have. These additional technologies should improve a candidate's score without automatically disqualifying someone who lacks them.
