Nurse Manager, Critical Care Transport †Phoenix Childrenâ€s

The Manager of Critical Care Transport Services is responsible for the management and organization of the transport program and ground transport services at Phoenix Children s Hospital.

This position promotes the delivery of high-quality neonatal and pediatric transport services through clinical practice, consultation, education, collaboration, leadership, and research.

Assumes accountability for coordinating the functions within the Transport Program which includes : program / services planning and development, clinical practice / system coordination, developing and managing the operational budget, supervising personnel working within the Transport Department, providing direction for those functioning as transport team members, overseeing related quality improvement activities, providing / facilitating education to the multidisciplinary personnel involved in transport care (both within Phoenix Children s Hospital and other outside agencies) while maintaining compliance with all state and national guidelines for ground transportation as defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS), and DNV.

Position Duties :

  • Coordinates, implements and evaluates transport services as well as system elements essential for an organizational multi-disciplinary team approach for the care and transportation of injured children.
  • Responsible for compliance with relevant state and national standards and regulations for neonatal and pediatric ground transport for the optimal care and transportation of the acutely ill or injured child.

Coordinates Transport Program verification and accreditation process by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS).

Coordinates transport program processes across the continuum, including ensuring the development and achievement of goals and objectives of the transport service;

planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of policies / clinical protocols / practice management guidelines and monitoring care that meets patients physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.

  • Participates in the development of neonatal and pediatric transport services at the community, state, and national level maintaining current knowledge of EMS regulations, changing technology, and standards of care / practice in specialty area.
  • Serves as Transport Services clinical practice / system resource for coordinating transport program services across the health system internally and externally.
  • Collaborates with administration, physicians, nursing, respiratory therapy, and ancillary departments to develop, implement, and monitor long-range strategic plan / departmental goals and objectives.

Serves as a liaison to administration responsible for the Transport Program.

Manages the collection of data and maintenance of accurate statistical information. Maintains the integrity of the database and its information.

Reports to all appropriate agencies as required by law. Develops reports as requested by authorized personnel and regulatory agencies.

  • Serves as the primary liaison for physician services, medical students, APRNs, nursing / allied PCH staff, EMS, community agencies, and organizations to promote efficient, organized management for the transportation and care of injured children.
  • Develops transport-specific education efforts.
  • Provides leadership and opportunities for the professional education efforts of the transport program. This includes education of registered nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, paramedics, and / or other team members involved in transport services.
  • Assumes responsibility for initial education and continuing education of all members of the transport team at Phoenix Children s.

Plans / facilitates courses required for the transport team and monitors for compliance with continuing education standards.

  • Monitors physician compliance for maintaining Advanced Life Support and required transport education CMEâ€s.
  • Initiates and participates in outreach activities and educational projects that promote the Pediatric Transport Service to health care professionals and the community.

Is actively involved in local and state activities to effect change related to improved transport services for children in the region.

  • Serves on organizational committees, both internal and external, to represent the mission and goals of Transport Services, promoting high-quality patient care and transport services.
  • Represents Phoenix Children s at the local, state, and / or national level regarding neonatal and pediatric transport issues.

Attends and presents at transport-related educational offerings to obtain / distribute current information to further develop the level of care delivered to children served by the Transport Program.

  • Provides Fiscal Management
  • Prepares and manages the operating budget demonstrating prudent resource utilization and effective collaboration with the accounting and billing departments to monitor account revenue and expenses.
  • Maintains current knowledge of legislative and regulatory activities that impact reimbursement for clinical services and professional activities.
  • Quality Improvement
  • Assumes a leadership role in the Transport Quality Performance Improvement Program in collaboration with the transport medical director(s), continually striving to improve patient outcomes, processes, and services for patients served by Phoenix Children s Transport Services.
  • Reviews and disseminates evidence-based practice / research in order to improve clinical practice related to transport care.

Collaborates in the development and implementation of research and / or quality implementation activities.

  • Collaborates with the Transport Medical Director(s) in coordinating quality improvement initiatives.
  • As requested, reports to the Phoenix Childrenâ€s and Quality Improvement Monitoring Committee(s), including Board Quality, etc.

  • Personnel Management
  • Supervises the following roles : Critical Care Transport RN, Critical Care Transport Respiratory Care Practitioner, Administrative Assistant, Data / Quality Coordinator.

Assures proper distribution of workload, accuracy, and completeness of work. Assigns other responsibilities as needed.

  • Delegates special projects and committee assignments as needed.
  • Assesses employee competency, qualifications, and job satisfaction.
  • Maintains files and documents in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Performs additional job-related duties as requested.

Required Qualifications :

  • Current AZ RN license or an RN license from a compact state with multistate privileges or the ability to establish licensure to Arizona law prior to start date.
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Bachelor's in Nursing.
  • Previous management experience and nursing experience in the Emergency Department or ICU.
  • Five years of experience in transport services / systems required to effectively manage resources, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide transport services and program development.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Current PALS / ACLS Certification.
  • Masterâ€s degree in Nursing or Business Administration
