Payroll Tax Specialist
Develops payroll tax strategy and policy. Audit, test, research new tax regulations and requirements as needed. Ensures the tax set-up is correct in the payroll system and that the tax accounts are reconciled against the impounding of the taxes. Evaluates current systems and recommends and develops operating efficiency improvements.
Principal duties and responsibilities may include auditing payroll processing / tax filing to ensure proper accounting and accurate calculations of taxes per all agency and legal requirements. Collaborate with outsourcing partners and internal customers to ensure proper administration of payroll and tax filings. Apply subject matter expertise to deliver high level support for payroll tax services. May lead projects related to payroll taxes and coordinates project support. May act as liaison to employees and with tax jurisdictions. Coordinates third-party payroll tax system implementations and upgrades. Works directly with employees to resolve outstanding payroll tax inquiries. Prepares reports illustrating payroll expenditures, including such items as tax payments. Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Interprets internal or external business issues and recommends solutions / best practices.
Required experience includes experience in handling payroll tax filing federal, multiple states, including experience in local taxes, and a minimum of 10,000 employees. Responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of all payroll tax related activities including compliance and reporting. Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of payroll tax operations. In-depth knowledge of payroll tax laws, regulations, and procedures at the federal, state, and local level. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex payroll tax issues. Investigates, analyzes, and responds timely and accurately to tax inquiries, agency notices, and audits from both internal and external agencies. Assists with various tax related payroll projects, system testing, and implementations. Ability to review business processes and identify gaps / areas of improvement. Ability to communicate effectively to internal customers; both verbal and written. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for effective delivery of analytic solutions. Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Access, Visio, Word) preferred Ability to work independently under general supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
Formal education, qualifications or training include Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field. 10 years of payroll tax or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 10 years of payroll tax experience required.
