The Transport Respiratory Therapist specializes in the promotion of optimum cardiopulmonary function and health. The respiratory therapist assists in assessing, stabilizing, and evaluating patients requiring critical care transport.

Responsibilities

Provides continuous monitoring and care of the patient per protocol during transport. Maintains documentation of patient assessment and condition, interventions required, and communication processes on the transport record.

Administers medication in accordance with policies and procedures of Critical Care Transport Department and respiratory scope of practice.

  • In conjunction with the Physician Consult Transfer Center (PCTC) and NCH Dispatch, organizes rapid transport mobilization and assures appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Works in accordance with on-call and scheduling requirements for the Transport Team.
  • Engages in the workplace community by staying aware of changes, participating in data collection or auditing, understanding Quality Improvement, and representing staff at relevant meetings and then reporting important information and updates back to staff.
  • Contributes to a continuous learning culture by helping others learn.
  • Assists in documentation of medical histories, symptoms, and vital signs for assigned patients.
  • Provides high quality services that internal and external stakeholders describe as excellent.

Qualifications

Education Requirement :

Bachelor of Science Degree, preferred.Licensure Requirement :

Registered Respiratory Therapist with current license to practice in the State of Ohio.Certifications :

  • Certifications required : BLS, NRP, PALS, ACLS, and trauma course prior to completion of orientation..
  • Successful completion of the Transport Therapist Training Program and Preceptorship.
  • Must obtain advanced certification within one year of completing orientation that is specific to the program’s patient population.Skills :
  • Demonstrates self-motivation, sensitivity, leadership, interpersonal skills, teaching ability, organization, and advanced level of critical thinking and decision-making.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to work under stress using sound judgment.
  • On call hours required.Experience : 3 years of critical care experience with 1-year neonatal intensive care experience preferred.
  • For persons with 3 years’ experience, the orientation period may be up to or over 1 year.
  • After orientation, you must maintain a point status of 0.9 FTE for 1 year after orientation
  • Stipulation of an additional 40 hours of critical care experience in the emergency department, 40 hours of experience in the PICU, and / or 80 hours in NICU at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is required during the transport preceptorship for applicants.
