This is a fantastic job for someone with food service experience, like a cafeteria worker or food service staff, who enjoys planning meals and cooking.

The Kitchen Manager coordinates with different areas of camp to help accommodate their food-related needs for everything from projects for cooking activities (which are actually run by other people) to making lunches for campers (and staff) who forget to bring, to planning all three daily meals for campers who spend the night 2 or 3 days per week.

The Kitchen Manager plays a vital role in providing an exceptional dining experience for campers and staff at our day camp.

The Kitchen Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the camp kitchen, ensuring high-quality meals are prepared and served in a safe and timely manner.

In this role, you would also collaborate with the camp director and other staff members to create a menu that meets the dietary needs and preferences of campers and staff.

Additionally, this position is responsible for managing inventory, ordering supplies, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen space.

Orientation takes place the week of June 17th and ends with Visiting Day (a pre-camp visit for all campers and families to meet staff) on Sunday, June 23.

The regular camp season begins June 24 and ends August 16 (with the option to work the following 9th Week for additional pay).

The camp day runs from about 8 : 00 AM - 4 : 00 PM, Monday through Friday, with three staff meetings on various Monday evenings.

The Kitchen Manager may also be asked to assist with up to 5 dinner cookouts throughout the summer.

Camp Grossman is on 75 acres of the Hale Reservation in Dover. JCC Greater Boston offers free camp bus service from many towns in the Greater Boston area, making it possible for many counselors / staff to receive transportation from their home communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all aspects of the camp kitchen, including meal planning, food preparation, and service
  • Supervising organization, cleaning, and sanitizing of cooking equipment and work area
  • Working with our vendors to order necessary supplies
  • Collaborate with the camp director and staff to create a menu that meets dietary needs and preferences
  • Ensure meals are prepared and served in a safe and timely manner
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen space by working with our vendors to order necessary supplies
  • Managing food supplies including ice cream and Challah for weekly Oneg, planning and executing meals for the Kibbutz program, fulfilling supplies for food projects for pre-planned bunk activities, special snacks for Program Days, cookouts, breakfasts and lunches for Unit overnights
  • Assisting the cooking specialist with menus and supplies with an eye toward camper allergies and ensuring camper safety
  • Adhere to food safety and sanitation regulations at all times and maintain the kitchen work conditions to meet / surpass state regulations for food safety
  • Managing unit overnights by assisting the cooking specialist with menus and supplies with an eye toward camper allergies and ensuring camper safety
  • Work in partnership with peers and Camp Leadership to provide a safe and memorable summer for the children

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent. Related experience in professional food service.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.

Skills and Abilities :

This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Current ServSafe certification (or ability / willingness to get)
  • Basic knowledge of Kashrut / willingness to learn and implement Kosher standards
  • Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations
  • Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
  • Excellent management and organizational skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Enjoys meal planning, cooking, and prep
  • Truly enjoy working with children
  • Has a strong desire to make a difference every day
  • Has strong teamwork and relationship-building skills, the ability to multitask, the ability to manage situations effectively and diplomatically
  • Ability and commitment to build strong relationships with campers, co-workers, and camp leadership
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of quality

Physical Requirements : Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities.

Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30-40 pounds (boxes of supplies, etc.). Able to stand for long periods of time.
