position summary

Merjent is seeking to fill three (3) full-time Principal Investigator (PI) positions throughout the U.S. to grow and meet its upcoming project needs for public and private sector energy industry clients, which include natural gas and oil pipeline, electric transmission, wind, solar, and other energy projects in multiple states.

Merjent is seeking candidates who can serve as a Secretary of Interior-qualified PI, while also managing and directing the cultural resources field-based aspects of projects.

These positions will have the flexibility to work from Merjent's Minneapolis, Minnesota office or remotely from a home office.

The anticipated salary for these positions is between $71,500-$85,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

responsibilities

The PI will be responsible for the following :

Promote compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and state environmental regulations and other laws relating to the protection of cultural resources.

Conduct archival research and background records checks.

Manage and / or conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III mitigation), construction monitoring, and assist or coordinate tribal survey / monitoring activities using standards and procedures that comply with Section 106 of the NHPA and state-specific requirements.

Manage project tracking / coordination and quality control while supervising field technicians and / or multiple field crews.

Conduct artifact analyses, evaluate resources for eligibility to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and state registers of historic properties, and complete state survey / site forms.

Support clients during agency and tribal consultation, including coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO), Native American Tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and multiple state, federal, and local agencies.

Manage budgets; prepare proposals, reports, and other technical documents; monitor field procedures; and author Research Designs, Treatment Plans, and NEPA and NHPA technical reports.

Train, coach, and mentor junior field staff.

Maintain qualifications to meet the guidelines of a PI in each state where they conduct fieldwork or review projects.

qualifications and experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience :

A minimum of an MA / MS in Anthropology / Archaeology or related discipline required.

A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience serving as a PI with at least 5 years of experience conducting archaeological field surveys.

Current technical specialization preferred (lithic analysis, ceramics, faunal analysis, etc.).

Meet the Secretary of the Interior qualifications for a Principal Investigator in Archaeology.

Demonstrated work experience in the archaeology of the Midwest, Northern Great Plains, Northeast, or Southeast regions of the United States.

In-depth knowledge of the historic preservation laws and policies, including NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA, as well as regional and state SHPO standards.

Experience using GPS units and familiarity with field collection methods, some GIS knowledge, general Microsoft Office applications, Excel, and Access database skills required.

Experience overseeing testing and data recovery excavations.

Must be willing and able to travel up to 50 percent during the field season.

Fieldwork often requires travel, overnights, and weekend work with larger projects requiring multi-week commitments.

Experience working in consulting services preferred.

Able to handle multiple project deliverables and be responsive to both internal and external clients.

Experience with tribal consultation, outreach, and relationship-building preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Holding established agency and industry relationships preferred.

Currently qualified, or able to qualify, as a Registered Professional Archaeologist preferred.
