Computational Research Scientist at the intersection of High-Energy Physics and Quantum Computing

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division has an opening for a Career-Track Computational Research Scientist at the intersection of High-Energy Physics and Quantum Computing to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will research in quantum computing, with a focus on the development of theoretical approaches and novel quantum algorithms that lead to scientific insights for high energy particle physics. This position will contribute to the development and / or advancement of open-source software tools. This position will be involved in the design and execution of simulations of physical hardware from testbeds and commercial partners. Involvement in the publication of the research and contributions at conferences is expected.

The position will be part of an integrated team of quantum algorithm developers, physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists that will design and deliver novel algorithms, error mitigation and compiling techniques for DOE relevant science domains that will lead to scientific discovery with quantum computers.

What You Will Do :

Lead the development of new, scalable algorithms based on quantum field theories appropriate for Hamiltonian simulation on quantum computers,

Lead the implementation and large-scale demonstration of quantum field theory algorithms on quantum hardware

Initiate, cultivate and sustain collaborations with researchers across and outside the laboratory

Participate in developing new funding initiatives and proposal writing as needed

Demonstrate ability to work independently, to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and to contribute to an active intellectual environment

Publish results in peer reviewed journals and national and international conferences.

What is Required :

PhD degree in physics or a relevant field.

A minimum of 2 years of documented postdoctoral research.

Demonstrated experience in novel algorithm development for quantum field theories on quantum computers.

Demonstrated experience implementing and executing Hamiltonian simulations on quantum hardware and achieving high impact results.

Deep understanding of quantum field theories, in particular those relevant to high-energy physics.

Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team contributing to an active intellectual environment.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications :

Experience using HPC platforms.

Strong programming skills in Python.

Notes :

This is a full time, 5 year, career-track term appointment and may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

The full salary range of this position is between $94,740 to $227,376 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $126,324 to $176,832 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
