Position Summary :

The Seasonal Welder I is responsible for safely performing welding techniques on various TRWD projects, assisting Welder IIs and IIIs on more complex welding projects and keeping the equipment and work areas in clean and in good working order.

The Welder I works as part of a team to assist with other duties such as vegetation maintenance, structure inspection and repair, and manual labor.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

  • Weld components in flat and vertical positions
  • Operate safety equipment, use safe work habits and maintain a clean, organized work environment
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
  • Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals
  • Operate a oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, or carbon arc gouger
  • Read engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations
  • Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment
  • Remove rough spots from workpieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
  • Position and secure workpieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors
  • Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths
  • Cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders, and templates, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knives
  • Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments
  • Operate metal shaping, straightening, and bending machines, such as brakes, iron worker, cutting torches, hand tools, band saws and shears
  • Set up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete work
  • Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies
  • Mix and apply protective coatings to products
  • Perform data entry on work orders and for time-keeping
  • Interact and coordinate with other TRWD personnel
  • Perform maintenance and inspections of floodgates, dam and spillway structures
  • Perform general maintenance of TRWD structures and grounds including pipeline and floodway
  • After hours Emergency Response
  • Maintain familiarity with strategic District levels of service
  • Continuous improvement monitoring and innovation efforts
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Experience :

  • One (1) year of experience using a cutting torch, grinding, and basic welding
  • Painting experience
  • Knowledge of basic welding safety and Hot Work permits

Required Education / Certification / License :

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas driver’s license

Desired Education / Certification / License :

  • Valid Texas CDL Class A or B without restriction E
  • CDL tanker (N) endorsement

Work environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically resides out in the field exposing the employee to weather conditions prevalent at the time.

This position will also work in confined spaces, on water ways such as lakes or rivers, and at various heights.
