Overview

This position is multifaceted involving administrative, regulatory, and veterinary activities. This position develops and manages the clinical and technical veterinary program, including the aquatics program.

In addition, provides clinical oversight / support for research animal care and use, medicine, disease, diagnosis, and experimental techniques for researchers at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute.

Ensures research and clinical activities adhere to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Public Health Service (PHS), and AAALAC rules and regulations.

In the event the Director / Attending Veterinarian is absent, the Associate Director will assume all responsibilities to lead the department.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Director / Attending Veterinarian and ARC Business Manager with departmental financial duties : assessment of yearly budget, maintaining expenditures, determining per diem rates, awareness of the monthly billing process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in preventative, clinical medicine, and surgery of laboratory animals (rodents, NHPs, aquatics, agricultural species)
  • Demonstrates knowledge in laboratory animal biosafety and biosecurity programs, including the acquisition, quarantine, and disposition of research animals.
  • Provides guidance to research personnel on animal model and protocol development.
  • Contributes to the management and professional development of the Animal Resources Core (ARC) staff.
  • Assists with the development, review, revision, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  • Assures compliance with the DEA, USDA, PHS Policy, and AAALAC regulations and standards.
  • Participates on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), include the review of protocols.
  • Participates on the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), include the review of protocols.
  • Participates in the veterinary on-call rotation.
  • Supervisory and managerial responsibilities for the clinical veterinarians.
  • Coordination and oversight of the controlled substance program.
  • Participates in teaching and academic responsibilities for visiting trainees / students.
  • Participates in ARC, Research Institute and NCH committees.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Veterinary degree (DVM / VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification.
  • Post-graduate work experience at an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)-recognized training program or equivalent.

ACLAM board certification is preferred.

  • 5+ years working as a laboratory animal veterinarian (Laboratory Animal Training Program or equivalent years qualify).
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. Ability to obtain Ohio license within 6-months.
  • Knowledgeable in federal animal welfare regulations, Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, and AAALAC accreditation standards.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, planning, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • High-level computer skills (Microsoft 365).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
