About

Performs difficult skilled technical work operating an ambulance, responding to calls for emergency medical services, providing emergency medical care, assisting EMT - Paramedic on traumatic and medical emergencies, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the EMT - Paramedic Shift Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Provides emergency and non-emergency care to residents and visitors of the County; operates equipment and administers first aid;

transports victims to emergency care facility; documents findings.

Responds to emergency calls which might require advanced life support.

Provides emergency medical care in accordance with established guidelines and written verbal instructions from physicians.

Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care.

Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care facility.

Observes patient in route and administers additional care as needed.

Completes and files documentation on calls.

Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on assigned apparatus and equipment; assists in cleaning station and grounds.

Participates in continuing education activities and maintaining certification hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology; thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation;
  • thorough knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents; thorough knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the County;
  • thorough knowledge of Ortivus Field Data software; skill in assessing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care;
  • ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to coordinate with other emergency service agencies;

ability to communicate effectively with the general public; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, associates, patients and their families.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED; completion of a certificate program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force;
  • work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting;
  • work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision;
  • vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;
  • hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and / or to make fine distinctions in sound;
  • work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and / or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
  • work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock;

work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

Possession of BCLS provider certification.

Possession of NCOEMS EMT credential.

Possession of NIMS ICS 100, 200 and 700 certifications.

Possession of CEVO certification.

Possession of HAZMAT Operations certification.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Electronic Payroll Deposit -

County Employees are paid bi-weekly, 26 times per year. We deposit your payroll check. Deposits are available to all banks and credit unions.

Deposits are made, so you can have access to your funds by Friday morning (payday). You can divide your payroll into two accounts, one you must specify the amount to go into and the second account would receive the balance.

Credit Union -

County Employees may be a member in the NC Local Government Employees Credit Union which is affiliated with the State Employees Credit Union.

  • The Wellness Center is open M-W-F 8am -12pm and 1pm to 4pm and T-TH 8am-12pm.
  • The Wellness Center is a partnership between Transylvania County and the City of Brevard.
  • County Employees may use the Wellness Center for all services at no cost.
  • Dependents over the age of 12 who are on your Medical plan may also use the Wellness Center.
  • Appointments are encouraged to help minimize any wait and to make the Center Services flow easier.
  • Time away from your work location to visit the Wellness Center is not changed to leave.
  • Services include : Routine bloodwork monitoring, allergy injections, monitoring chronic illnesses, manage and authorize prescriptions, coordinate referrals, school physicals and testing for flu, mono and strep.
