Job Summary :

The position directly supervises all colleagues in the forensics program and is responsible for all aspects of the sexual assault program in accordance with the state protocol, the forensic nurse examiners, public relations, and involvement with local law enforcement and prosecutors.

The positions shares responsibility for the quality of patient care provided. The supervisor provides planning, organization, staffing, direction and coordination of the scope of services originating from the forensics program.

Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education : Graduate from school of nursing with current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio.

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Licensure / Certification : Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Ohio. Successful completion of the Sexual Assault Nurses Examiner Training and additional didactic and clinical hours related to the domestic violence related to the medico-legal examination preferred or obtained within a year of employment
  • Experience : At least 2 years of experience functioning in an Emergency Department setting.
  • Demonstrated completion of an approved sexual assault nurse examiners program and service as a sexual nurse examiner for acute cases for at least 2 years
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to travel to multiple site locations
  • Self-directed
  • Demonstrated leadership and teaching experience
  • Ability to function as an interdisciplinary team member and able to manage stressful situations
  • BLS healthcare provider training required

Job and Technical Competencies

  • Provides supervision, leadership, and direction to system-wide forensic nurse colleagues to ensure 24-hour coverage and accountability.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, orienting, counseling, and evaluation all forensic program colleagues.
  • Organizes course curriculum to hire and continuously grow a renowned sexual assault curriculum for Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
  • Conducts regular meetings with student health, title 9, and office of institutional equity at The Ohio State University to ensure the forensic program is meeting the needs of students.
  • Responsible for the development, coordination and evaluation of educational activities related to the Forensic Nurse Program.

Develops and facilitates annual competencies for forensic nurses. Participates in the development and delivery of education for other learners.

  • Serves as a role model in patient care areas and provides a high level of clinical expertise specially regarding victims of sexual assault.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate departmental policies related to the forensic program.
  • Collects statistics related to forensic patients and conducts regular chart audits for all hospital facilities as required by state regulations, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Receives and coordinates subpoenas directed to the forensic team. Testifies in court as an expert and assists other forensic RN’s in preparing for court testimony.
  • Works collaboratively with law enforcement, Attorney General’s Office and local victims services, and submits monthly billing to the Attorney General’s Office as required.
  • Works directly with Crime and Trauma assistance programs for those patients in need of financial assistance and follow up with billing.
  • Works directly with the STAR program for patients in need of their assistance
  • Participates in long range planning, goal setting, program development, and evaluation for the Forensic Nursing Program.
  • Conducts regular meetings with Forensic Medical Director
  • Serves as a 24-hour on call resource to forensic program colleagues and all OSUWMC colleagues.
  • Prepares and maintains forensic RN schedules to assure proper coverage for all OSUWMC facilities.
  • Conducts the preparation of payroll.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements goals and policies for the resource management of the forensic program including budgeting, allocation of human resources, capital expenses, physical facilities, and supplies.
  • Establishes and maintains strong, positive relationships with patients, families, colleagues, medical staff, public / community and other OSUWMC departments.
  • Participates in ongoing community outreach activities related to forensic patient needs
  • Fosters an environment that ensures the department has the information necessary to function optimally.
  • Serves on the community Sexual Assault Committee as a Board Member.
  • Completes public speaking engagements and participates in community events as needed.
  • Meets population specific and all other competencies according to the department requirements.
  • Promotes a culture of safety by adhering to policy, procedures and plans that are in place to prevent workplace injury, violence or adverse outcome to associates and patients.
  • Relationship-based Care : Creates a caring and healing environment that keeps the patient and family at the center of care throughout their experience at OSUWMC following principles of our interdisciplinary care delivery system.
  • Models and promotes professionalism in nursing practice within the model of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program.

Other Job Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for compliance with organizational Integrity through raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing.
