Senior Center Activities Coordinator

The Senior Center Activities Coordinator at the Elder's Building is responsible for developing and overseeing a comprehensive program of recreational and cultural activities for elder community members. This role requires a deep commitment to enhancing the well-being of elders, promoting cultural engagement, and fostering a sense of community.

Major tasks and responsibilities include :

  • Planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing a variety of community and human service programs events for senior citizens in the Muckleshoot Tribal community.
  • Driving a commercial vehicle with air brakes.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Planning and coordinating travel arrangements.
  • Administering medications while on trips or in case of emergency.
  • Organizing and supervising classes, workshops, and activities for senior adults.
  • Surveying the interests and needs of seniors in the community; relaying this information to program management to assist in program development.
  • Preparing for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, newsletters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding senior programs.
  • Responding, in person or on the telephone, to inquiries about senior services, events, and activities.
  • Providing information and referral services for a variety of social services available to senior citizens within the community.
  • Driving a van to provide transportation services for seniors for field trips and other excursions.
  • Preparing and maintaining related records and other documents, as required.

Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

Education, experience, and training for position :

Associate's degree in recreation, geriatrics, social services, or a closely related field. Three (3) years of combined relevant experience and education may be considered in lieu of the Associate's degree. One (1) year of experience working with seniors. A valid Washington State commercial driver's license (CDL). First Aid and CPR certification are required at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

Specific skills / knowledge / abilities required for position :

Skills :

  • Operating a personal computer, including word processing, Publisher, Excel, and other applicable software; office equipment (fax / copy machine, mail / stamp machine).
  • Operating commercial vehicles with air brakes as well as other tribal vehicles.
  • Data entry.
  • Operating a chair lift.
  • Developing, coordinating, and directing varied activities involved in a community seniors program.
  • Phone etiquette for reservations.
  • Organization and time management.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Interpersonal and human relations.
  • Cultural crafts.
  • Ability :

  • Be creative, crafts / production.
  • Monitor and track stats.
  • Communicate with the community and outside personnel, as well as, other organizations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, Tribal and community leaders, Tribal members, and general public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Do presentations to small or large groups.
  • Work independently and / or with supervisor, at all times.
  • Receive direct instruction.
  • Act in a professional manner in attitude and performance.
  • Knowledge :

  • Equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program.
  • Senior recreation philosophy, planning, and administration.
  • Surrounding area tribes and reservations.
  • Medical terminology (i.e. : handicap assistance, etc.).
  • Cultural crafts.
  • Physical requirements :

    The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderate when in the field.
