A Day in Life as a Lead Environmental Scientist at Hanson
In this role, you will:
- Make significant contributions to infrastructure, transportation, power, water, and land development projects.
- Lead and oversee complex environmental projects from inception to completion.
- Conduct and manage environmental modeling, field surveys, data analysis, and technical studies.
- Prepare, review, and certify technical reports, categorical exclusions (CEs), environmental assessments (EAs), and environmental permit applications.
- Develop scopes, schedules, budgets, and ensure project delivery aligns with quality and regulatory requirements.
- Interpret federal, state, and local environmental regulations such as NEPA, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, and RCRA, including relevant state laws.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies, including IDEM, USACE, USFWS, EPA, and local municipalities.
- Lead wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species assessments, habitat evaluations, Phase I ESAs, and other field investigations.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor and consultant to clients across diverse markets.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, planners, surveyors, and GIS specialists.
- Mentor and manage junior environmental staff, supporting internal training and professional growth.
- Assist with proposal development, including technical writing, project approach planning, and cost estimation.
- Participate in client meetings, presentations, and industry events, showcasing Hanson's environmental expertise.
- Play a key role in growing Hanson's environmental practice in Indiana and neighboring regions.
What We Seek
The following qualifications will help you excel in this position:
- Strong understanding of NEPA, CWA Section 404/401 permitting, ESA compliance, and other significant environmental laws.
- Proven experience with fieldwork and technical reporting.
- Outstanding communication, technical writing, and client engagement skills.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams effectively.
- Willingness to travel for project-related tasks (mostly regionally).
- Preferred professional certifications such as PWS, CEP, CPESC, CHMM, or similar credentials.
- Experience within transportation, utility, energy, federal, or municipal project settings is advantageous.
- Familiarity with GIS applications, ecological modeling, or advanced environmental analysis tools is a plus.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental engineering, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant environmental consulting or regulatory agency experience.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $115,000
