Job description

Intern Recruiter

Join our team as an Intern Recruiter and discover recruiting, interviewing, and talent operations while helping us find passionate volunteers who want to make voting more accessible for everyone. This isn't busy work or coffee runs. You'll make real decisions about who joins our team, conduct actual interviews, and learn systems that recruiting professionals use every day.

Time Commitment : 5-6 hours per week during times that work with your class schedule. One scheduled team meeting (Wednesdays at 4 PM PT) and weekly 30-minute mentoring sessions with our Chief Talent Officer.

We get it. Midterms and finals happen. We were students once. We build flexibility around your academic schedule.

Real responsibility from day one. You're not observing recruiting, you're doing recruiting. With training and support, but making actual decisions that affect who joins our movement.

Skills that transfer immediately. Modern ATS systems, interview techniques, resume screening, and candidate communication.

Decision-making authority. We want you to learn and grow comfortable making decisions. That's how you develop confidence and judgment.

Mentorship that matters. Weekly one-on-ones with experienced recruiting professionals who invest in your development and will gladly serve as references for future opportunities.

Week 1-2 : Learning by watching

  • "Fly on the wall" sessions observing experienced recruiters
  • Learning our ATS (Applicant Tracking System) and tools
  • Understanding WeVote's mission and volunteer roles

Week 3+ : Doing the work

  • Screening applications and resumes (with coaching)
  • Conducting video interviews with potential volunteers
  • Partnering with our team to create new volunteer opportunities
  • Helping candidates understand how they can contribute
  • Suggesting improvements to make our process more welcoming
  • Throughout : Building skills

  • Using professional recruiting software and video conferencing
  • Learning to assess candidates with different backgrounds fairly
  • Understanding how mission-driven organizations attract talent
  • Practicing written and verbal communication in professional settings
  • Students (high school or college) interested in :

  • HR and recruiting as potential career paths
  • Nonprofit work and volunteer organizing
  • Learning how technology can strengthen democracy
  • You might be a good fit if you :

  • Have done any volunteering (school, community, religious organizations)
  • Grew up in a family or community that valued giving back
  • Are curious about what makes people want to contribute their time
  • Want hands-on experience in a professional environment
  • Can commit 5-6 hours weekly with Wednesday 4 PM PT availability
  • Are located in the US and are comfortable working remotely
  • Don't worry if you've never done recruiting before. We're looking for people who want to learn, not people who already know everything.

Professional skills you can use immediately :

  • Experience with modern recruiting tools (ATS, LinkedIn, video interviewing)
  • Interview and communication techniques
  • Resume screening and candidate assessment
  • Project management and coordination
  • Career development :

  • Real recruiting experience for your resume
  • Strong letter of recommendation from our Chief Talent Officer
  • Reference for future job or graduate school applications
  • Network connections in nonprofit, civic tech, and recruiting communities
  • Possible academic credit (we'll work with your school)
  • Personal impact :

  • Direct role in building tools that help millions of voters
  • Experience creating inclusive, welcoming communities
  • Skills in connecting people with meaningful opportunities
  • Part of a movement strengthening American democracy
  • We believe in teaching by doing, with support. You'll start with extensive "fly on the wall" sessions, move to baby steps with coaching, and gradually take on more responsibility as you build confidence.

Our documentation is excellent because it has to be. We're a volunteer organization. You'll have guides for everything, and always someone to ask questions.

Weekly team meetings keep everyone connected. Regular one-on-ones ensure you're learning and growing. And our Slack channels mean you're never stuck without help.

Your education comes first. We work around your schedule, not the other way around.

This isn't just task assignment. We invest in teaching you skills that will help throughout your career.

Successful interns get strong references and letters of recommendation. We take pride in helping launch careers.

Send your resume and a brief note describing :

  • Why you're interested in WeVote's mission
  • What draws you to recruiting / HR or nonprofit work
  • Any volunteer experience or community involvement
  • What you hope to learn from this internship
  • Any questions you have for us
  • That's exactly why internships exist. We value curiosity, commitment, and willingness to learn over extensive experience.

We'd rather hear from students who are genuinely interested than miss someone great because they doubted themselves.

This internship combines real professional development with meaningful impact. We can't wait to see what you'll bring to our team.

We know that unpaid roles can present challenges for some students. We're committed to making this opportunity as accessible as possible :

  • Flexible scheduling around your classes, work, and other commitments
  • Open discussion of needed accommodations for technology, time, or work style
  • Support for participation - if you need assistance to participate fully, please let us know
  • We believe diverse perspectives make our team stronger, and we're willing to work with you to find solutions that make this internship feasible.

WeVote is fully volunteer-driven, and we are proud of our grassroots model. We welcome volunteers of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, ages, income levels, and political perspectives. Everyone is committed to fair, accessible elections. Whether you're new to this work or bring years of experience, there's a place for you.
