Job description

Hotel Financial Controller (PT)

Join The Ivy Hotel, a Relais & Chteaux and Two Michelin Key property in Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, as our Part-Time Financial Controller.

The Financial Controller is a key, hands-on role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for The Ivy Hotel, Magdalena, and the Spa. Working closely with the General Manager, Managing Director, ownership, and department heads, the Controller ensures that financial information is accurate, timely, and useful in guiding the operation.

This is an onsite, part-time position of approximately 2025 hours per week. The schedule offers some flexibility but must accommodate month-end close, payroll, reporting deadlines, and other time-sensitive needs.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting and financial reporting for The Ivy Hotel, Magdalena, and the Spa
  • Manage the monthly close and prepare accurate, timely financial statements and management reports
  • Prepare and review monthly profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash-flow reporting, and departmental financial results
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are accurately recorded, properly supported, and appropriately coded
  • Complete and review bank, credit card, merchant processor, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, deposits, and payment processing
  • Review payroll entries, labor reporting, benefit allocations, and related reconciliations
  • Verify hotel, restaurant, and spa revenue reporting and investigate discrepancies
  • Maintain accurate accounting for guest deposits, gift certificates, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, fixed assets, and deferred revenue
  • Monitor cash flow and maintain effective cash-control procedures
  • Prepare and file local taxes and ensure compliance with sales and use, occupancy, personal property, and other applicable tax requirements
  • Assist with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial projections
  • Provide ownership and management with financial analysis related to revenue, labor, cost control, and operating performance
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial controls, reduce costs, and improve profitability
  • Maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Coordinate internal, external, and regulatory audits
  • Serve as the primary liaison with outside accountants, tax advisors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners
  • Support management, ownership, and department heads in meeting the property's financial and strategic goals
  • Complete additional accounting and financial projects as needed

** Please note that a cover letter is required for consideration.**

Qualifications

  • At least five years of hotel accounting experience
  • Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or comparable senior accounting professional
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, financial reporting, and balance sheet reconciliation
  • Demonstrated experience managing the monthly close and preparing financial statements
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Experience with accounting and payroll systems such as ADP or similar platforms
  • Experience with hotel property-management systems; familiarity with OPERA is strongly preferred
  • Experience with restaurant point-of-sale systems and multi-department hospitality accounting preferred
  • Excellent financial knowledge and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, accurate, and able to manage multiple deadlines independently
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
  • CPA or hospitality accounting certification helpful but not required

This Is the Job for You If:

  • You enjoy a hands-on role and are comfortable working in the details
  • You understand the financial rhythms and requirements of a hotel
  • You take pride in keeping accounts accurate, reconciled, and shipshape
  • You identify discrepancies and follow them through to resolution
  • You can explain financial information clearly to non-financial managers
  • You enjoy working as part of a collaborative, close-knit team
  • You are flexible, practical, and able to prioritize in a dynamic environment
  • You exercise sound judgment, discretion, and strong integrity

We offer:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Retail and hospitality perks
  • A high-quality daily staff meal
  • Support for ongoing learning and development
  • A collaborative, supportive team environment

All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

We look forward to hearing from you!
