Salary
$55,800.00–$97,600.00 yearly
Job description

Founded in 1979, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a center for innovation dedicated to advancing the field of gifted education through research on testing, programs, and other supports for advanced learners. On the premise that advanced learners come from every community and every demographic, we aim to understand and inform how these students need to be nurtured to achieve their full potential as learners and global citizens. CTY also runs in-person and online academic programs for bright learners in order to cultivate a community of advanced learners and connect students in and outside the classroom.

We are seeking a CTY Program Manager (PM) to support the development, planning, and execution of academic experiences for advanced learners that are rigorous, novel for CTY students in content or approach, and foster a fun peer community. Student experiences vary in length and modality (in-person residential, in-person day, virtual, hybrid), and the balance of responsibilities varies seasonally. CTY Program Managers have a primary assignment but are expected to handle responsibilities that may span modalities, academic subject matter, and other focus areas across the Academic Program unit.

We are currently seeking candidates for a PM position which will primarily support CTY's on-campus programs by serving as dedicated PM for one to three sites during the summer. (For more information see https : / / cty.jhu.edu / programs / on-campus.) The PM will also have additional responsibilities as a subject matter expert in science and engineering to provide consultation on programmatic decisions in this area, across modalities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program managers oversee summer on-campus site operations and are expected to be on-site for a significant portion of time during the eight weeks that summer programs are active.
  • While working on-site, all required travel (if beyond normal commuting distance) and room / board expenses are covered by CTY.
  • When not on-site during summer sessions, PMs are expected to be "on call" at all-times to address any urgent issues.

Program Management

  • Prior to launch of summer programs, work closely with host site(s) and CTY colleagues to prepare all arrangements and logistics. Provide all required information to host sites, review contracts to ensure alignment with program requirements, oversee catering / meal planning, obtain "standing orders" for site nurse, plan classroom / lab utilization, support adherence to local / site compliance requirements, and participate in annual course planning and ongoing enrollment management.
  • During summer programs (eight weeks), work on-site as needed. Serve as a liaison between casual staff, site staff, and CTY leadership to provide ongoing updates, manage emergent issues, solve problems, and provide timely reports on successes and challenges to leadership.
  • After programs close, participate in program debriefs, work with colleagues to implement program enhancements, prepare reports required by licensing agencies, handle customer service matters, archive records, and review invoices for accurate billing.
  • Represent CTY by collaborating with host site staff, parents, and other key stakeholders. Address questions and concerns from parents, students, or staff and serve as a liaison to CTY / host site leadership as appropriate.
  • Develop, document, and refine standard operating procedures for program delivery.
  • Staff Supervision, Hiring, and Oversight

  • Participate in hiring / interviewing for program staff, in collaboration with university and CTY HR colleagues.
  • Supervise and manage casual administrative staff, instructors, and other site staff during the summer programs and full-time assistant program managers year-round.
  • Participate in annual evaluation of eligibility of in-person site staff for rehire.
  • Conduct performance coaching conversations with staff as needed.
  • Curriculum Development and Supervision - Science and Engineering

  • Serve as subject matter expert in collaboration with the curriculum and instruction team to consult on issues of course selection, development, and revision in the area of science and engineering.
  • Author new courses as content expertise and other responsibilities allow.
  • Manage lab supplies procurement, in collaboration with CTY Finance and Administration staff.
  • Serve as subject matter expert to consult on inquiries about content issues for the Enrollment Management team as needed.
  • Other Duties

  • The PM will also have opportunities to support or participate in research efforts, staff committees and working groups, and other collaborative projects within CTY and / or the broader JHU community.
  • Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
  • Specific Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to domestic out-of-state and / or international program locations and live on site.
  • Ability to be "on-call" 24 / 7 during the eight weeks that programs are in session.
  • Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Ability to manage high volume of work and multiple priorities.
  • Ability to manage accountability of self and others in a matrixed environment with multiple functional supervisors or project leads.
  • Problem-solver, proactive in addressing challenges, escalates issues appropriately.
  • Strong professional judgment, character, and integrity.
  • Excellent customer service skills and leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Computer literate, ability to learn and use multiple applications and platforms.
  • Additional Information

  • While summer programs are in session (eight weeks), Program Managers are required to be on site for a significant portion of time during the 8 weeks that summer programs are active. During this time, they must be able to travel and work nights, weekends and summer holidays. (When holidays are worked, exempt employees may take an alternate holiday within 60 days).
  • Vacation time off is restricted between Memorial Day and the close of the in-person sites.
  • When summer programs are not in session, this position is hybrid (working at JHU's Mt. Washington site 3 days a week). Candidates must live within commuting distance of Baltimore, MD.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Four years experience teaching college or pre-college; residential life; professional camping; or other relevant academic administrative functions.
  • At least four years of related experience in an education setting.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree and / or classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience working with advanced learners or coursework / training in gifted education.
  • Because many programs are residential, experience working in a residential education setting is preferred.
