Job description

Senior IT Project Leader

Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.

Flagship is seeking an experienced Senior IT Project Leader to drive strategic technology initiatives across the enterprise. This role is ideal for a collaborative leader who thrives in ambiguity, builds strong cross-functional partnerships, and enjoys turning complex ideas into successful outcomes.

Reporting to the Senior Director of IT Performance, the Project Leader will partner with technical teams, business stakeholders, and executive leadership to deliver initiatives aligned with Flagship's strategy. Projects may span enterprise applications, infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, AI, scientific systems, and other strategic IT capabilities.

Rather than simply managing timelines, the Project Leader serves as the connective tissue between business strategy and technology execution, bringing people together, aligning priorities, removing obstacles, and ensuring successful delivery.

Lead strategic technology initiatives

  • Lead complex, cross-functional technology initiatives from planning through implementation and operational transition.
  • Partner with business and IT leaders to define project objectives, scope, success measures, and delivery strategies.
  • Develop and manage integrated project plans, schedules, budgets, resource forecasts, and governance activities.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with organizational priorities.

Drive cross-functional leadership

  • Build trusted partnerships with business leaders, technical teams, and executive stakeholders.
  • Facilitate collaboration across multiple departments, vendors, and external partners.
  • Lead steering committee meetings, executive updates, and project governance forums.
  • Create alignment among diverse stakeholders while driving timely decision-making.

Manage complexity and risk

  • Anticipate and proactively manage project risks, issues, dependencies, and scope changes.
  • Resolve delivery challenges by balancing business priorities, technical constraints, and organizational impacts.
  • Ensure project decisions are made by data, risk assessments, and strategic objectives.
  • Drive organizational readiness, communications, and change management activities to support successful adoption.

Advance delivery excellence

  • Champion consistent project management practices, governance standards, and delivery methodologies.
  • Develop executive-level reporting and portfolio insights that enable informed decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project delivery processes, tools, and operational effectiveness.
  • Capture lessons learned and promote continuous improvement across the IT organization.

Mentor and influence

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to project teams and business partners on delivery strategy and execution.
  • Mentor project leaders and team members, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Contribute to the evolution of project leadership capabilities across the IT organization.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience leading increasingly complex technology projects and enterprise programs.
  • Demonstrated success delivering large-scale, cross-functional technology initiatives in a matrixed organization.
  • Strong experience partnering with senior business and technology leaders.
  • Proven ability to influence without formal authority and build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Experience managing project budgets, timelines, vendor relationships, and resource planning.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the ability to navigate ambiguity and competing priorities.

Preferred qualifications

  • PMP or equivalent project management certification.
  • Experience with Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid delivery methodologies.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Smartsheet, Microsoft Project, or similar.
  • Experience leading technology initiatives involving cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, AI, digital workplace technologies, or scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with organizational change management principles and change enablement strategies.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

We recognize that great candidates often bring unique strengths without fulfilling every qualification. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your background and interest in Flagship.

Recruitment & Staffing Agencies: Flagship Pioneering and its affiliated Flagship Lab companies (collectively, "FSP") do not accept unsolicited resumes from any source other than candidates. The salary range for this role is $128,000 - $176,000. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience. Flagship Pioneering currently offers healthcare coverage, annual incentive program, retirement benefits and a broad range of other benefits. Compensation and benefits information is based on Flagship Pioneering's good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future.
