Job description

Position Summary

The Safety Specialist serves as a field-based safety professional responsible for supporting the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of Feeney Brothers' health, safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance programs. This position works directly with field employees, supervisors, subcontractors, and customers to identify hazards, verify compliance, provide coaching, investigate incidents, and promote a proactive safety culture.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Field Safety Oversight • Conduct routine field visits, audits, inspections, and observations across assigned work locations. • Monitor compliance with company safety policies, customer requirements, and regulatory standards. • Verify implementation of excavation safety, utility damage prevention, traffic control, confined space, lockout/tagout, trenching and shoring, PPE, and other critical safety programs. • Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and implement corrective actions. • Participate in job planning activities and pre-task risk assessments.

Incident Response and Investigation • Respond to workplace injuries, vehicle incidents, utility damages, line strikes, near misses, environmental incidents, and other significant events. • Conduct incident investigations and root cause analyses. • Prepare timely reports, corrective actions, and follow-up documentation. • Monitor corrective action completion and effectiveness.

Coaching and Employee Engagement • Provide field coaching to employees, foremen, operators, drivers, and supervisors. • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and safety-related training. • Promote employee involvement through observations, hazard reporting, and stop work authority. • Build positive working relationships that encourage open communication.

Compliance and Documentation • Complete field audits, inspections, observations, and safety documentation accurately and timely. • Maintain records related to training, inspections, corrective actions, and compliance activities. • Assist with customer audits, regulatory inspections, and internal assessments.

Training Support • Assist with employee onboarding, orientation, and qualification activities. • Support Operator Qualification (OQ) compliance and field verification activities. • Identify training needs and communicate recommendations.

Customer and Contractor Interface • Represent Feeney Brothers professionally with customers, inspectors, contractors, and regulatory agencies. • Participate in customer meetings and safety committees. • Monitor subcontractor compliance with safety requirements.

Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Industry related preferred. • Minimum 3 years of construction, utility, industrial, transportation, or safety-related experience preferred. • OSHA 30-Hour Construction preferred. • First Aid/CPR/AED preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of OSHA construction standards. • Knowledge of excavation, trenching, utility construction, traffic control, and heavy equipment operations. • Strong hazard recognition, communication, coaching, and organizational skills. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software.

Key Performance Expectations • Visible and consistent field presence. • Timely completion of audits, inspections, and investigations. • Effective corrective action management. • Positive engagement with employees, supervisors, customers, and subcontractors.

This position influences safe work practices through coaching, engagement, compliance verification, and field leadership, but does not have direct supervisory authority over company personnel.
