Job Summary :

The Maintenance Technician performs skilled work in the operation of various light equipment (trucks, tractors with attachments, loaders, etc.) in street and stormwater maintenance. May fill in for equipment operator I as needed. May serve as team leader to seasonal employees in street / stormwater maintenance activities.

This is a term-limited position funded through December 31, 2025, with the possibility of becoming permanent if additional funding is approved at a later date.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills :

Minimum Requirements

  • One (1) year experience operating light equipment.
  • One (1) year experience in street / stormwater maintenance activities.
  • Current valid Colorado class R driver's license with good driving record.
  • Working knowledge of City geography

Preferred

  • Traffic Control desirable and Flaggers Certification required within six months.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding how to operate and maintain various light equipment such as trucks, tractors with attachments, loaders, and other related machinery.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in street and stormwater maintenance activities.
  • Awareness of proper safety practices and procedures, including work zone setup, traffic control, and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Familiarity with the city's geography to effectively navigate and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Basic understanding of traffic control measures, with Flaggers Certification being required within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge of operating snow removal equipment such as loaders, one-ton trucks with plows, and spreaders.
  • Awareness of protocols for responding to emergencies and inclement weather, including on-call responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in completing necessary paperwork such as work orders and time sheets accurately.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures to ensure compliance and safe operations.
  • Essential Functions :

  • Ensure proper safety practices and procedures are followed by self and fellow team members, i.e., work zone setup, traffic control, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Safely operate and maintain variety of light equipment for Street Division.
  • Complete paperwork accurately, i.e., work orders, times sheets, etc.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Serve occasionally as a team leader in a variety of street / stormwater maintenance activities and projects.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with supervisor, team members, other City employees and citizens.
  • Understand and follow City, Department, and Division policies and procedures and use good judgment in decisions regarding operation of light equipment and street / stormwater maintenance.
  • Operate loaders and other division equipment including one-ton trucks with plows and spreaders to remove snow.
  • Work overtime and respond to after-hour calls, particularly during emergencies and inclement weather, as well as serve as on-call person on a rotational basis.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities

    Work Environment and Physical Requirements :

  • Skills and ability to work in the most extreme conditions removing manhole covers and Storm Water inlet grates weighing over 100 pounds; assisting other programs that require maximum physical effort.
  • Frequently works in outdoor environment subject to severe weather conditions of extreme heat and cold.
  • Frequently works in or around equipment, traffic, materials, and chemicals with fumes, noise, dust, dirt, heat, vibration, flying objects, etc.
  • Frequently works in or around equipment in potentially dangerous situations, i.e., traffic, work zones, steep ditch banks, manholes and / or confined space, trenches, overhead / underground utilities, snow and ice-covered streets, etc.
  • Dangerous to considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury i.e., walking in traffic and working in dangerous construction sites.
  • Manual dexterity is required to complete work tasks through safe and proper operation of hand tools, power tools, motorized equipment, and confined space entry.
  • Frequently sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, etc.
  • Possess the strength and stamina to frequently shovel and rake asphalt during an 8-12 hour shift. Other tasks include laying pipe, concrete work, patching asphalt, rip-rapping ditches, trimming trees, mowing and spraying weeds, cleaning storm sewer inlets, etc.
  • Safely move equipment and / or materials over uneven surfaces and terrain in varying environmental conditions.
  • Use hand and foot controls in light equipment operations.
  • Sit for long periods of time in equipment (8-12 hour durations).
  • Vision and hearing sufficient to operate a variety of light equipment in traffic and work zones.
  • Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions.
  • Frequently lift or force weights up to 15 pounds. Regularly lift or force weights of 30-50 pounds, and occasionally lift or force weights of 50-100 pounds.

  • Employee is subject to working alone, with groups, and / or attending meetings.
  • May be required to conduct business in alternate locations within City buildings or field sites, sometimes in formal settings.
  • May be required to work extended hours in the evening, holidays, or weekends.
  • Frequent interruptions and be required to manage competing priorities with inflexible deadlines.
  • Frequent participation in meetings.
  • Frequent contact occurs with employees and the public, in person and on the telephone.
  • Frequently is required to sit and talk or hear customers.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities with frequent interruptions and an expected high level of accuracy in work is expected.
  • Work is safe to having minimal hazards that are typically found in a general office environment where there is rarely little or no exposure to injury or accident.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as : preparing and analyzing data / figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading of printed materials; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and / or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices graphs and gauges; and / or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Employee is required to have visual acuity for close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as : operating machinery where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach and to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures for inspection purposes.
  • Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions, frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 30 lbs) and use of medium weight tools; walking on uneven ground or having to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach while performing duties; entering / exiting manholes or vaults; walking near or across rivers and ditches; working in all weather conditions at times of excessive temperatures of heat and extreme cold, working in or near moving traffic with appropriate traffic control set up;
  • The essential functions of this job require frequent balancing, bending / stooping, carrying / lifting light to heavy objects, climbing, fingering, grasping, repetitive motion, hearing, sitting, standing, talking, and walking. Occasionally the employee will be required to pull, push, reach, feel temperature, and kneel.
