Job description

Project Developer Energy Efficiency & Infrastructure Retrofits

This Project Developer role focuses on leading energy efficiency and infrastructure retrofit projects within data centers and other mission-critical facilities. You will own projects from initial site assessment through proposal delivery, including evaluating existing conditions, identifying energy-saving opportunities, developing scopes of work, and calculating energy savings. The position blends technical fieldwork, analytical modeling, and client-facing responsibilities in mechanical and electrical environments, with strong visibility to leadership and the opportunity to shape processes in a growing, entrepreneurial organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead energy efficiency and infrastructure retrofit projects from initial assessment through proposal delivery for data centers and other mission-critical facilities.
  • Conduct detailed energy audits and assessments of mechanical, electrical, and MEP systems in operational environments.
  • Evaluate existing facility conditions, identify energy conservation measures (ECMs), and develop technically sound scopes of work.
  • Perform energy savings calculations and modeling, including ROI, payback, and lifecycle cost analysis to support business cases.
  • Collect and validate field data, including equipment nameplate information, operating conditions, trend logs, and other performance data.
  • Document existing systems through detailed notes, photographs, sketches, and diagrams, ensuring documentation meets internal quality standards.
  • Analyze chiller systems, cooling infrastructure, and other HVAC systems to identify efficiency and reliability improvements.
  • Review and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, MEP schematics, and equipment documentation to inform project development.
  • Develop comprehensive technical proposals, including scope of work, assumptions, cost estimates, and energy savings summaries.
  • Prepare and deliver client presentations, clearly communicating technical findings, recommendations, and proposed project solutions.
  • Manage vendors and subcontractors during the development phase, including obtaining pricing, validating technical solutions, and coordinating site activities as needed.
  • Collaborate with commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts to validate system performance and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Support reliability engineering initiatives for critical infrastructure, particularly in data center and mission-critical environments.
  • Perform trend log analysis and other data-driven assessments to identify operational improvements and control strategy enhancements.
  • Work independently in the field to conduct audits and jobsite walks of operational data centers and other critical facilities.
  • Ensure project documentation, energy models, and scopes of work align with internal standards and client expectations.
  • Participate in virtual project meetings and cross-functional collaboration to coordinate project development activities.
  • Take ownership of projects, proactively driving tasks, managing timelines, and contributing to continuous improvement of project delivery processes.
  • Contribute to the refinement of project management and PMO standards by sharing lessons learned and best practices.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through clear communication, responsiveness, and reliable technical guidance.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience with energy auditing and energy assessments in mechanical and electrical environments.
  • Background in MEP systems, including mechanical and electrical systems assessment.
  • Experience with data centers or other mission-critical facilities such as hospitals, large campuses, telecommunications, satellite facilities, or similar operations with low or no downtime tolerance.
  • Strong HVAC systems knowledge, including chiller systems and cooling infrastructure.
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems and controls in an energy or reliability context.
  • Ability to perform energy savings calculations and modeling for energy efficiency projects.
  • Demonstrated capability in developing scopes of work for energy efficiency and infrastructure retrofit projects.
  • Experience conducting field data collection and validation, including equipment nameplate data and operating conditions.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and MEP drawings and equipment documentation.
  • Experience with ROI, payback, and lifecycle cost analysis for capital and energy projects.
  • Ability to write clear, detailed technical proposals and supporting documentation.
  • Experience delivering client presentations and managing stakeholder expectations.
  • Capability to manage vendors and subcontractors during project development.
  • Comfort working independently in operational facilities, including data centers and other critical environments.
  • Demonstrated project ownership from assessment through proposal delivery.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar industry certification, or strong willingness to obtain such certification with support.
  • Experience with commissioning and retro-commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with energy conservation measures (ECMs), trend log analysis, and reliability engineering in critical infrastructure.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced consulting environment with varied and changing project types.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience specifically in data center retrofits and mission-critical infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) credential, or progress toward such credentials.
  • Prior estimating experience for energy efficiency or infrastructure projects.
  • Exposure to construction environments and coordination with construction teams for MEP and energy projects.
  • Experience with cooling infrastructure upgrades in data centers, healthcare facilities, or telecommunications environments.
  • Background in reliability engineering for critical systems where uptime is essential.
  • Experience with commissioning and retro-commissioning of complex mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Comfort operating with a high degree of independence, ownership, and accountability.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, curious mindset focused on continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with clients, vendors, and internal teams in both virtual and in-person settings.

Work Environment

This is a fully remote position with flexibility on location within the United States. The role combines home office work, virtual project meetings, and customer interaction with occasional site visits. Travel is required up to approximately 30% of the time to conduct audits and jobsite walks of operational data centers and other mission-critical facilities. On site, you will collect equipment nameplate data, field measurements, and operating conditions, and document existing systems through notes, photographs, and sketches, ensuring all documentation meets internal quality standards. The environment is fast-paced and consulting-oriented, where every project is differentone month may focus on a data center cooling retrofit, while the next may involve a healthcare or telecom infrastructure upgrade. You will work regularly in mechanical and electrical spaces, MEP environments, and mission-critical facilities where reliability and uptime are essential. The culture emphasizes an entrepreneurial and collaborative atmosphere rather than heavy bureaucracy, valuing ownership, accountability, communication, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. You will have high visibility with leadership, opportunities to influence project delivery processes and PMO standards, and the chance to grow into larger programs and senior leadership responsibilities as the organization continues to scale.
