Job description

Transportation Construction Manager

Are you a transportation construction leader who can coordinate multiple projects, guide inspectors, and support owners and contractors to meet schedule and budget targets?

MBP is looking for a Transportation Construction Manager to support transportation projects and deliver high-quality technical services. The ideal candidate brings extensive construction experience with progressive career development in roads, bridges, and infrastructure work.

Responsibilities

Manage the technical effort for transportation construction projects, leading project teams and coordinating with owners, contractors, and stakeholders to meet deadlines and budget targets. Serve as a primary point of contact, provide guidance and recommendations, and support decision-making on project execution. Represent MBP in client interactions while facilitating collaboration among project participants and maintaining a high standard of care. Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and track multiple project activities on concurrent projects and determine staffing requirements to verify adequate coverage.
  • Serve as liaison between the Owner and General Contractors on construction projects, including coordination of job site construction observation.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and manage multi-disciplinary work efforts; oversee validation of products and materials ordered for projects to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor and assess construction performance and record construction activities to verify compliance with construction documentation requirements.
  • Inspect work in progress to verify that methods, materials, and equipment conform to approved standards.
  • Maintain project documentation through Construction Inspectors' daily status reports; chart progress of contract schedules via regularly scheduled meetings; review and incorporate shop drawing submittals and RFIs; review contractor change orders, make recommendations for changes, and incorporate change orders into the project record.
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled construction meetings.
  • Assist in training and provide technical guidance to Construction Inspectors.
  • Review punch lists submitted by others and verify items are completed and corrected prior to recommending substantial completion to the Owner.
  • Maintain a perspective overview regarding federal, state, and local laws regulating construction procedures, safety practices, and working conditions.
  • Provide customer service and professional etiquette to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Perform administrative duties including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports.
  • Support business development, including leadership in short-list presentation efforts.
  • Conduct personnel management tasks including performance reviews, coaching, disciplinary issues, and approval of timesheets, time off, mileage, and expense reports.
  • Maintain certifications and re-certifications.
  • Actively participate in company activities, including branch and company meetings.

Who We Are Looking For

Experience:

  • Extensive construction experience including functional leadership of project or task teams for a construction manager, contractor, owner, developer, or designer focused on the construction of roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects.
  • Evidence of progressive career development.

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge:

  • High school degree required; associate degree or higher desired.
  • Construction practices, principles of construction management, and project controls.
  • Scheduling, cost estimating, documentation, contract administration, and construction techniques.
  • Personnel and project management techniques including budgeting, leadership, training, and business development.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), or other DOT certifications strongly preferred.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designation preferred or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Leadership and training capabilities for Construction Inspectors and team members.
  • Client service and professional etiquette when interacting with the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and project stakeholders.
  • Organize and manage multiple assignments across concurrent projects.
  • Conduct productive construction meetings and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Review technical documentation and maintain accurate project records with strong attention to detail.
  • Business development presentation skills.

Guidance/Responsibility:

  • Works independently and determines solutions with limited guidance.
  • Provides training and leadership to Construction Inspectors and other team members.
  • Receives overall guidance on emphasis and approach from Regional Transportation Managers, Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, and/or Group Management.

Supervisory:

  • Performs in a supervisory role leading project teams and self-performing technical tasks.
  • Provides mentorship and oversees personnel management activities including performance reviews, coaching, disciplinary actions, and time and expense approvals.
  • Reports to Regional Transportation Managers, Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, and/or Group Management.
