Job description

Your Job

As a Test Facility Engineer, you will work alongside experienced professionals who are passionate about engineering, committed to operational excellence, and focused on delivering results for our customers. You'll partner with team members across instrumentation, engineering, drafting, EH&S, and QA/QC disciplines—taking ownership of complex projects from initial design to commissioning.

We value team members who take initiative, share knowledge, and support each other’s growth. If you’re energized by engineering challenges, enjoy working with diverse equipment systems, and want to make a meaningful impact through hands-on work in a world-class facility—this is the team for you.

Our Team

At the John Zink R&D Test Facility, we are a collaborative team of engineers, technicians, and specialists driven by innovation, precision, and a commitment to safety. As part of John Zink, a global leader in advanced combustion and emissions control technologies, our team plays a critical role in developing, testing, and demonstrating world-class equipment used in refining, petrochemical, and power generation industries.

Our state-of-the-art Tulsa-based facility is where innovation meets application. Here, we not only test and validate equipment performance before shipment, but we also push the boundaries of what’s possible in combustion and emissions technology through ongoing R&D initiatives. We operate in a fast-paced, hands-on environment that demands technical excellence, creative problem-solving, and cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the design and execution of projects for the R&D Test Facility, including customer demonstrations, R&D initiatives, and facility improvements.
  • Lead projects that identify reliability improvements for the facility.
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting and resolution of equipment and infrastructure issues within the facility.
  • Own and manage the facility’s mechanical integrity programs.
  • Manage all phases of project work, from upfront engineering and design through execution, installation, and commissioning of equipment.
  • Develop and implement solutions for a wide range of engineering challenges involving complex systems like furnaces, flare systems, thermal oxidizers, boilers, pumps, motors, and utilities.
  • Oversee estimating, scheduling, budgeting, and drawing preparation for facility-related projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Ensure strict adherence to EH&S protocols and quality standards throughout all phases of project development and facility operations.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including instrumentation and control (I&C), engineering, QA/QC, EH&S, and drafting.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects, maintaining accountability for safety, quality, timelines, and financial performance.
  • Mentor and support other team members, sharing expertise and helping to build technical knowledge across the team.
  • Identify and implement facility maintenance and improvement opportunities that enhance operational efficiency and capability.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, and equipment design.
  • Knowledge of operation of typical process plant equipment (pumps, blowers, boilers, etc.)
  • Ability to read P&IDs, mechanical equipment spec sheets, fabrication details, isometric drawings, etc.
  • Experience with Hazardous Operation (HAZOP) / Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) equipment design review.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Five+ years’ work experience managing project budgets, schedules, equipment/piping design, equipment fabrication, and sub-contract labor / fabrication of equipment for the petrochemical or oil & gas industry.
  • Experience managing the installation and commissioning of industrial equipment.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with good quality fabrication practices (i.e. ITPs, NDE, WPS / PQRs, Paint (NACE), etc.)
  • Process design experience of combustion systems (examples: furnaces, flares, thermal oxidizers, etc.)
