Overview

Princeton University’s Program for Community College Engagement invites applications for Teaching Transfer Associates to teach, advise, and conduct outreach at a community college, with the goal of strengthening connections between Princeton and the host community college and increasing the number of students at that community college who transfer to strong four-year institutions.

For the teaching portion of the appointment, associates will primarily teach courses for the community college; one Princeton-accredited course will also be taught by each associate as part of their appointment and a concurrent lecturer appointment with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty at Princeton will be made for that course.

Onboarding and orientation to the program will occur in the summer period prior to the start of fall-term courses at the community college.

The appointment is for 12 months, expected to span the period of July 1 through June 30, with mandatory orientation and curriculum development activities in the summer period prior to the fall term as well as program learning and assessment activities at the conclusion of the spring term.

Appointments may be renewable twice for a total of three academic years of appointment. Reappointed associates may be called upon to teach summer courses on Princeton’s campus.

Application should include a current CV, a cover letter reflecting on your interest in and preparation for teaching and advising in this program, and a brief document (no longer than one page) that lists the range and types of community college courses you might teach at the host community college.

While we may partner with up to three NJ community colleges in the 2024-5 academic year, applicants are encouraged to consult the Mercer County Community College course catalog (https : / / mercer-ss.

colleague.elluciancloud.com / Student / Courses) as an example to help identify a range of courses that you might teach.

Responsibilities

TEACHING

Teaching approximately 15 credits per year at the community college, including standard community college courses as well as at least one course accredited by Princeton but taught at the community college.

Associates who teach courses for which the number of student contact hours required per week is greater than the number of credit hours associated with the course will normally teach fewer than 15 credit hours over the course of the year to ensure equity in teaching assignments and loads.

This most commonly occurs with courses in the sciences and engineering.

The Princeton accredited course, which counts as four of the 15 credits, will be one of a suite of courses designed to introduce students to disciplinary methods and build skills that will serve them well in the transition to a four-year institution.

Associates will have an opportunity to tailor portions of their Princeton course to include key content and skills from their own field.

Associates who are reappointed will have summer duties that may include assisting in onboarding new associates as well as teaching a summer course at Princeton.

ADVISING AND OUTREACH

Advising and conducting outreach to community college students in order to support them in pursuing their educational goals and exploring transfer to four-year institutions.

Specific advising and outreach duties will be developed in consultation with the community college, with associates receiving support and direction from the program managers.

Typical advising activities will include one-on-one advising on the transfer application process, hosting informational sessions on the value of and pathways in the liberal arts and engineering, organizing sessions on financial aid awareness, and serving as a liaison between the community college and Princeton faculty for research and learning opportunities for community college students.

In cases where associates will exceed 15 credit hours or the equivalent instructional load based on the courses assigned, advising and outreach activities will be adjusted down slightly to keep the duty time equitable.

TRAINING AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

Participating in training and professional development, as well as collaborating with program staff on the developing design of the program.

Associates who are reappointed will collaborate with program directors on the onboarding and training of new associates.

Necessary qualifications :
