Position Overview

Office of Development is looking for an individual with project management and strategic communications skills whose primary obligation is to provide complex editorial, marketing, and publishing support for all communications strategies related to philanthropic endeavors including fundraising, event management, and stewardship for the Senior Communications Specialist position.

This role assists in the coordination for all philanthropic gift proposals, donor monograph production, event marketing reports, magazines articles, and all other special communications deliverables as assigned.

The Senior Communications Specialist assists in providing content development, final review and oversight for all published products and ensures delivery of all publication production for the National Office of Development.

You will work with leadership with development of budgets and contracts for in-house and contract communications projects.

The ideal candidate for this position is an outstanding communicator capable of meeting deadlines and working well under pressure ensuring all communications sent out under the National Office of Development support the overall goals and objectives of the department and of the Boy Scouts of America.

Responsibilities

Creates and manages all proposals and case statements. Conducts research, writes, and prepares personalized content for major gift proposals to prospective donors based on existing research and input from development professionals.

Maintains superior archive system for past proposals, research, and other resources, including photographs and illustrations.

Manages the Donor Monograph and assumes writing and production responsibility for related activities. Interviews donors, writes, fact-checks, edits, proofreads, and coordinates production and printing.

Monitors production and printing budget to ensure costs are within budget. Monitors contract and in-house resources to meet set production deadlines and budgets, as applicable and as required.

  • Serves as a storyteller working to convey the urgency of our work, illustrate our impact and move the audience to action, particularly towards financial support.
  • Serves as the project management liaison and content support for special projects (e.g. annual donor reports, event invitations, scripts, letters to donors and prospects, donor Thank-You cards, presentations, talking points, website content, meeting support, etc.

Coordinates asset management through National umbrella (asset management system).

Assists leadership with oversight for lower-level Communications Specialist and in-house and contract employees by monitoring the conduct of work activities (e.

g. writing and / or editing written and spoken content; editorial production). Coordinates content, development, and editorial production.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Competencies :

  • Knowledge of : Principles, techniques, and objectives of media relations; strategic communications planning; management practices and principles;
  • journalistic writing and editing techniques; standard office equipment and software used for electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentations;

elements of creating effective and compelling fundraising proposals, case statements, and grant requests.

  • Skill in : Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the media, the public, and employees; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing;

attend and participate in events and meetings as required by the event schedule of the National Office of Development, some of which will require out-of-town travel (no more than 5%).

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of communications experience.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Preferred : Knowledge of Boy Scouts of America, Scouting programs and venues; experience working a non-profit environment, experience in producing customized proposals for principal level solicitations as well as other prospect and donor facing communications
