The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment.

We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

The UCS Science Network (SN) is a network of thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts throughout the country who share the desire to put their knowledge to work to protect our health, safety, and environment.

The Science Network enables technical experts to advance the role of science in tackling today’s complex problems. Key elements of building the Science Network are engaging a diverse group of scientists, developing a sense of community where members can be inspired by and learn from one another, and building the organizing skills and political acumen of leaders in science advocacy.

The Science Network sits in the Office of Programs, Policy, and Advocacy, whose role is to advance cross-program collaboration and decision-making, including the implementation of our scientist organizing model.

The ideal candidate for the Science Network Mobilizing Manager is an experienced advocate and project manager who centers equity in their work, is willing to experiment and find creative solutions to challenges, and likes to juggle multiple projects at once.

The Science Network Mobilizing Manager conceives, coordinates, and implements plans to grow and maintain a healthy and robust UCS Science Network.

They also design and coordinate efforts to diversify membership; develop and implement recruitment, cultivation, and engagement strategies, and manage tracking and evaluation of network programming.

This role will have the opportunity to work with many stakeholders across the organization to ensure we are providing meaningful engagement opportunities for Science Network members to grow their advocacy skills and make an impact on UCS campaigns.

Working with the rest of the Science Network team, the Mobilizing Manager will help strengthen the connection between the Science Network’s member cultivation efforts, our work to build a base of supporters that aligns with our values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and leadership development opportunities that will help retain and engage Science Network members.

They will act as a strategist and thought partner for UCS campaigns seeking to strengthen their scientist recruitment and cultivation.

They will create opportunities for scientist advocates to build community together to learn and grow together as equity-focused advocates.

Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to recruit new Science Network members. This includes conceptualizing, implementing, and assessing recruitment strategies, with a focus on building a more diverse and inclusive community.
  • Lead efforts to develop and implement community-building strategies, to foster connection and peer-learning among members.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of cross-organizational and program-specific programming tailored for early career scientists and scientists of color.
  • Work with UCS campaign staff to co-develop cultivation and recruitment strategies that help them meet their campaign goals.
  • Manage our organizational presence at events and scientific association conferences.
  • Design and manage the team’s implementation of comprehensive tracking and evaluation.
  • Manage expert engagement database processes and serve on cross-departmental teams to improve the organization’s metrics and evaluative processes for scientist engagement.
  • Manage the Science Network team’s storytelling efforts to spotlight successful engagement within UCS, with other Science Network members, and with other target audiences.
  • Supervise the Science Network Senior Coordinator. Manage Science Network interns and consultants as needed.
