About the Position

The Investigator in the Professional Standards Bureau of the Sheriff's Office performs specialized comprehensive investigations of cases involving allegations of employee misconduct and critical incidents involving Office personnel.

This position plays an integral role in maintaining compliance with all related rules, regulations, laws, and Office Policies, and advanced knowledge of criminal law is a requirement.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

High school diploma or GED

Experience :

Three (3) years related investigative experience

Combined education and experience qualifications :

An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year for year basis.

Other r equirements :

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire .

Training that may be provided on-the-job : FEMA NIMS - IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.

Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates pass a background review and polygraph examination.

Our Preferred Candidate has :

Prior investigative experience specific to workplace misconduct .

B ilingual in English / Spanish.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS :

  • Conducts comprehensive investigations of cases alleging misconduct by Office personnel in accordance with Policy GH-2, Internal Investigations .
  • Interviews employees, complainants, and witnesses; obtains and reviews evidence as needed.
  • Prepares investigative reports and maintains case files.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with supervisor as to the status of all investigations to ensure all cases are reviewed in detail and compliance is maintained.
  • Provides recommendations for investigative closure of allegations as unfounded, exonerated, sustained, or not sustained.
  • Communicates regularly to complainants to keep them informed of the status of the investigations.
  • Conducts thorough and complete investigations of all critical incidents involving Office personnel and presents facts to the Critical Incident Review Board.
  • Interacts with other governmental and law enforcement agencies.
  • Provides information that factually represents the findings of administrative investigations.
  • Comprehends and maintains a strong working knowledge of applicable criminal law, as well as Office Policies, Procedures, and Court Orders.
  • Attends and testifies in court proceedings as required.
  • Maintains all County issued equipment.
  • Travels offsite to meet with employees and civilians to gather evidence as necessary.
  • Completes annual and mandatory training as specified in Office Policy
  • Attends quarterly community meetings; interacts with the public, answers questions, and receives comments, concerns, complaints and commendations regarding Office personnel.

SELECTION PROCEDURE :

The hiring authority will select the successful candidate based on departmental needs.

All offers of employment made to new hires and rehires at Maricopa County are contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment thorough background investigation and polygraph.

A background investigation and polygraph will be conducted on any current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County.

These requirements do not pertain to employees of elected officials who undergo background investigation processes administered through their respective offices.

Typically successful candidates are hired at a salary rate, up to midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity and budgetary allowances.
