Parking and Transportation Services is a self-supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet, streets, walkways and way-finding.

PTS supports alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle and promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool, or take the bus.

The department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and administers the fuel credit card, vehicle insurance and safety, and employee driver training programs.

PTS Mission

Facilitating safe and effective integrated transportation systems that provide services for pedestrians, bicycles, transit and vehicles.

Responsibilities

70% Parking- related repairs and maintenance

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair parking access control equipment, including contract card access equipment, ticket dispensers, and gate equipment.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair parking-related infrastructure including, but not limited to : booths, loops, entrances / clearance bars, gate arms, intersection equipment on the Transitway, garage doors and / or garage door mechanisms, chain gates, flooring / flooring grates, fencing, and intercoms.
  • Install, maintain, and repair electronic parking meters.
  • Assist in maintaining disability access to / within parking facilities.
  • Complete minor pedestrian and disability door and hardware adjustments and repairs, door sweep installation, closer repairs.
  • Eliminate trip hazards, vinyl concrete patching, rebar removal, etc.
  • Install, maintain, and repair bike racks, lockers, and collect derelict bikes.
  • Prepare work specifications, obtain cost estimates, and provide alternative options.
  • Order supplies and equipment from various vendors through established procedures.

15% Signs and traffic-related projects

  • Use vinyl cutting machine to fabricate / modify custom signs.
  • Install, repair, and replace signs and poles on miscellaneous surfaces.
  • Replace bollard covers.
  • Replace fluorescent and incandescent lamps in lighting fixtures and signs.
  • Inspect, repair electronic (LED) signs, troubleshoot multi-message LED signs and software controlled components.

10% Equipment repair and maintenance

  • Maintain and repair small motors (electric) and engines (fossil fuel, steam, hydraulic) such as skid-loaders, power sweepers, plows, cleaning equipment, power sprayers, backpack blowers, compressors, etc.
  • Troubleshoot equipment by accessing computerized equipment monitoring systems (e.g. automated vehicle count system).
  • Maintain and repair solar bicycle RFID systems (ZAP equipment). Maintain and repair electric car charging systems.
  • Maintain and repair pay machines, including :
  • Resolving ticket jams
  • Resetting machines when frozen or to clear errors
  • Resetting loops
  • Loading tickets
  • Replacing / troubleshooting ticket dispensers and credential readers (front mechs / UCDs)
  • Performing preventive maintenance cleaning of UCD's printers and other internal components

5% Other transportation related projects

  • Consult with project management (i.e. supervisor, Owner's Representative, contractor) regarding specialized new construction or building upgrades to add scope and perspective based upon specialized knowledge and experience.
  • Coordinate / direct Facilities Management staff and / or outside contractors on projects when needed. Oversee daily operations of Motorist Assistance Program (MAP).
  • Handle assistance calls.
  • Train staff to use equipment.
  • Preform preventive maintenance and repair on MAP equipment.
  • Perform seasonal tasks, and other miscellaneous duties, as required.
  • Mount, adjust and perform preventive maintenance on snow plows.
  • Adjust, repair and perform preventive maintenance on sand / salt distributor.
  • Assist with snow plowing, sanding / salting efforts.
  • Perform lead worker responsibilities.
  • Assigns work to staff and reviews work completed.
  • Provides training and work direction on a continuous basis.
  • Directs outside contractors, including Facilities Management, when needed.
  • Minor non-structural welding for fabrication and repairs.
  • Minor electronic repair, including soldering.
  • Test, inspect, and repair safety equipment, including eyewash stations, and personal protection equipment; also maintain documentation (MSDS).
  • Support operations staff for events : set-up / breakdown of traffic control devices and quality control.

Salary Range : $47,590 to $60,299

Work Environment

This position requires primarily fieldwork that is completed outdoors. Work in most facilities requires exposure to weather and seasonal elements (heat, cold, snow).

Facility lay-outs include varying / uneven surfaces and stairwells. This position requires walking, climbing stairs and / or ladders, and operating motor vehicles, skid-loaders, power sweepers, etc.

Exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and elements possible. Positions may require the ability to walk or stand for majority of day;

bend, climb, reach, kneel; carry, lift, push and pull 50 lbs. or more.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Technical education / training in mechanical maintenance and / or applicable work experience to total three years. Education / training can account for no more than two of the three years.

Positions may require specific licenses and / or certificates (i.e. boilers license, welding certificate, etc.) as well as specialized experience that relates to specific facilities.

Demonstrated ability to read, write, and communicate competently in English is essential for safety and customer service reasons.

Must be proven able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, equipment manuals, work orders, schematics, and drawings.

Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position
