JOB SUMMARY
- Under direction of VP, Mission & Ministry, this position facilitates work of all operating unit Ethics Advisory Committees (EACs) and co-chairs the system level Joint Ethics Advisory Committee (JEAC);
- oversees development of OhioHealth clinical policies and protocols in areas of clinical care and organizational decision-making identified by OhioHealth leadership and medical staff as ethically complex;
- manages clinical case consultatation staff; with IS develops and manages secure intranet database for documentation of clinical ethics consultations;
and serves as resource for Medical Residents in general clinical ethics education and in provision of ethics specific rotations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree
Field of Study : Bioethics
Years of experience : 5
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE
Master level degree is required in a field directly related to clinical ethics (bioethics). Well versed in ethical theory, legal foundations, and regulatory environment related to clinical ethics in a medical setting.
Minimum 5 years experience in facilitation of hospital based Ethics Advisory Committees and provision of case consultations.
Demonstrated competency in medical staff relations as related to ethics consultations and policy development with an independent medical staff.
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
Doctoral level Degree in related field and experience in managing staff. Degree or certificate program in applied / clinical ethics.
Familiarity with legal aspects of medical ethics. Demonstrated ability to bring cross cultural and interfaith knowledge to clinical ethics issues.
Familiar with the United Methodist social Principles as they apply to clinical ethics (bioethics). Demonstrated competency in leading development of ethics policies and protocols.
experience in developing and guiding research to increase effectiveness of EAC, JEACs, and case consultation work.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Under direction of VP, Mission & Ministry : Co-chairs and facilitates JEAC by working with physician co-chair in agenda development and identification of yearly priorities for policy development, research, legislative advocacy, and education.
Creates necessary materials for meeting agendas; manages meeting logistics. Interprets regulatory environment that impacts JEAC cope of responsibilities such as DNR, POLST, Grieving Parents Act, organ donation, futile treatment, early pregnancy termination, etc.
Partners with OhioHealth Community and Government Relations in formulating and implementing OhioHealth response to relevant legislative matters.
As new operating units are brought into the OhioHealth system, leads due diligence process in all matters related to clinical ethics and develops plan to bring new operating units into alignment with OhioHealth clinical ethics standards of practice.
Serves as Liaison with Decedent Care Coordinator s in maintaining OhioHealth values and standards of practice related to organ and tissue donation.
Works with Information Services to ensure appropriate documentation of ethically related issues such as DNRs and Advance Directives are maintained within the electronic medical record.
