Job description

Job Description :

Providing for loved ones, planning rewarding retirements, saving enough for whatever lies ahead – our policyholders count on us to be there when it matters most. It’s a big ask, but it’s one that we have the power to deliver when we work together. We collaborate and innovate – pushing one another to transform not just Pacific Life, but the entire industry for the better. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Pacific Life is more than a job, it’s a career with purpose. It’s a career where you have the support, balance, and resources to make a positive impact on the future – including your own.

The Director of Strategy and Portfolio Management (Group Benefits) will be responsible for leading the development, execution, and governance of business strategies and the strategic project portfolio for the division. This position will oversee the full portfolio lifecycle – ensuring projects and programs are prioritized, monitored, and executed to support division and enterprise strategic objectives. The Director will partner closely with senior management, product management, and cross‑functional teams to translate business strategy into actionable initiatives that drive growth, innovation, and operational excellence.

This role reports to the Head of Strategy & Portfolio & Product Management for the Workforce Benefits Division and will play an integral role in translating the division’s strategy to action. You embrace the ambiguity and high degree of complexity associated with standing up a new business and new organizational structure. You are willing and able to jump in where needed and you bring an innovative mindset to solving critical business problems.

How you will make an impact :

  • Develop, execute, and monitor integrated business strategies to achieve short‑term and long‑term organizational goals.
  • Lead the end‑to‑end portfolio management lifecycle – including project planning, initiation, resource allocation, execution, benefits realization, and value tracking.
  • Maintain awareness of market research and analysis to identify strategic opportunities and risks, and translate external trends into relevant internal actions.
  • Ensure strategic initiatives are aligned with overall business objectives by collaborating with cross‑functional teams and senior leaders.
  • Establish and maintain effective portfolio governance practices to prioritize, monitor, and report on projects and programs for maximum business value.
  • Prepare and present strategic plans and recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high‑performing, scalable project management team, leveraging internal and external resources as needed.
  • Drive ad‑hoc strategic initiatives and continuously identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.

The experience you will bring :

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in strategic management, portfolio management, program leadership, or management consulting within financial services, insurance, or related industries.
  • Proven experience managing large, complex project portfolios and teams, including third‑party and cross‑functional resources.
  • Strong knowledge of portfolio and project management methodologies, techniques, and best practices, as well as strategy development and execution.
  • Ability to blend innovation and agile methodologies with traditional project management to optimize outcomes and collaboration.
  • What will make you stand out :

  • Group benefits experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a compelling narrative, drive strategic change and influence senior leaders (e.g., facilitating workshops, leading brainstorming sessions, and driving decisions to conclusion).
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to interact autonomously, seamlessly, and effectively with / across senior management.
  • Deep understanding of business and market dynamics, with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, including data synthesis and analysis.
  • Experience building / operating in high‑growth or start‑up environments.
  • Effective working in a fast‑paced, ambiguous, and collaborative environment.
  • You can be who you are.
