The San Francisco Standard is seeking a Head of Growth to lead our growth engine, from audience development and funnel optimization to retention and lifetime value, ensuring that our journalism reaches, engages, and converts the people who shape the Bay Area's future. You'll be responsible for driving subscriber growth, deepening engagement, and scaling new revenue streams in alignment with our strategic plan.
This is a critical leadership role at the intersection of editorial, product, data, marketing, and revenue, and ideal for a growth leader who thrives on experimentation, cross-functional collaboration, and measurable impact.
This is a full-time, in-office position.
Key Responsibilities
Subscription growth & retention
- Lead strategy and execution to grow our paid subscriber base, building the economic engine that sustains ambitious local journalism.
- Design and optimize conversion funnels across channels (organic, newsletters, paid marketing, partnerships, events).
- Develop clear audience segmentation, value propositions, and pricing strategies that increase conversion and reduce churn.
- Partner with editorial and product teams to strengthen the subscriber experience, optimize onboarding and renewal rates.
- Establish clear growth metrics (CAC, LTV, churn, ARPU) and drive accountability across the organization.
- Leverage data-driven insights to inform audience acquisition, retention, and monetization strategies.
Audience development & habit formation
Build strategies that turn casual readers into regular, loyal users through newsletters, personalization, and improved user experience.Oversee newsletter growth and segmentation, ensuring we deliver content that builds habits and drives conversions.Work closely with retention product leader to optimize membership benefits to pay off value proposition.Collaborate with editorial on content strategies that build repeat engagement and subscription intent.Qualifications
Experience driving growth for a digital media, subscription, or consumer brandUnderstanding of digital subscription models, funnel optimization, and retention strategyAbility to lead cross-functional teams (product, data, marketing, editorial) toward measurable goalsAnalytical thinker with fluency in data, experimentation, and performance marketingPassion for journalism, innovation, and shaping the future of local mediaThe pay range for this role is $175,000 to $200,000.
