Job Description :

PRIMARY PURPOSE / GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons including surveillance, accident prevention and rescues in the water, adjacent pool areas, and the Tiernan Field House.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Supervision

  • Comply, enforce and educate patrons regarding TFH pool policies, procedures
  • Maintain constant supervision of patrons in the pool and pool area : act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency

Safety & Emergency Preparedness

  • Comply with TFH rules and California mandated regulations
  • Participate in 4 of 5 In-Service trainings each semester, train for and execute emergency procedures until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports. Complete accident and incident reports for all injuries occurring at TFH (call campus safety and follow the designated protocol)
  • Maintain swimming skills; swim a minimum of 500 meters per week
  • Inspect the pool and pool area and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the TFH Professional Staff on site
  • Responsible for opening and closing procedures including unlocking pool area, swim equipment available to patrons, inspecting and testing rescue equipment, and removing or installing pool cover
  • Wear uniform provided by TFH, professional attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service
  • Perform various maintenance duties to maintain a clean and safe facility (as directed)
  • Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES :

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :

One or more years lifeguarding experience preferred or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Work permit required if under 18 years of age.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Valid 2 years)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer (Valid 2 year)
  • AED Essentials (Valid 2 year)
  • First Aid (Valid 2 years)

LICENSES / CERTIFICATES :

Current certification in Lifeguarding from the American Red Cross

Current certification in CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid from the American Red Cross.

OTHER :

HOURS , CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS :

The College is seeking to fill numerous positions for coverage during the pool operations in the summer months. These are temporary, non-benefits-eligible, part-time, non-exempt positions.

Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department. This position requires that the employee is able to cover other shifts, and work weekends and after-hours as needed by the College.

Hourly rate : $16.25. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, andtraining.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY :

None.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards using the freestyle or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 101b object, return to the surface swim back to the starting point with both hands on the object, exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds
  • Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes without the use of hands
  • Must be able to perform a successful rescue of a simulated active and / or passive drowning victim with proper American Red Cross protocol upon request
  • Perform swimming rescues on drowning victims including : approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require the removal of the victim from the water, who may weigh from 50-300 pounds.
  • Perform tasks requiring physical strength and / or stamina to effectively rescue victims, administer first aid, and CPR;
  • Perform work, which involves frequent lifting, pushing and pulling of heavy objects;
  • Hear and distinguish a variety of sounds in a noisy environment such as participants in need of assistance, whistles, or co-workers requesting assistance in a rescue effort;
  • See program participants in need of assistance from any distances;
  • Speak loudly to warn program participants of impending danger;
  • Successfully complete all training provided and required by the department .
