Scope of Responsibilities

The Assistant Director provides programs and services in the areas of community engagement, multicultural education, social justice education, and leadership development.

They are knowledgeable of the histories, cultural and developmental issues of Native American / Indigenous, Black, Latinx, Asian / American Pacific Islander (A / API) and multi-racial / multi-ethnic communities.

The assistant director’s role focuses on the A / API at Duke University. They collaborate with Student Affairs units and academic departments when appropriate.

The Assistant Director advises student organizations and also acts as liaison among Center for Multicultural Affairs and various university administrative offices and academic departments as well as the Durham community and professional organizations.

The campus and Durham community’s associations empower the Assistant Director to develop and apply latest knowledge and research in education and training.

Reports to Associate Director.

DUTIES

Programming (35%)

Develop and implement annual programming and other traditional programs Plan and implement major programs including cultural graduation and award ceremonies, orientation events, and supporting heritage months (lead A / APIHM planning committee) Engage graduate / professional students by sharing campus resources and creating community with their peers as well as with undergraduate students.

Design and implement CMA programming with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Outreach / Consultation / Advising (30%)

Advising Advises Duke’s key cultural student organizations on best practices of diversity, equity, and belonging initiatives for Asian / American and Pacific Islander student organizations and other cultural diasporic communities with emphasis on community development and identity formation.

Provide counseling on an individual basis and on-going advocacy on pertinent issues affiliated with the students that we serve.

  • Consultation
  • Provides consultation on an individual basis and on-going advocacy for cultural communities particularly A / API communities to ensure the quality of their academic, social and personal experience.

Support alumni affinity groups in collaboration with Duke Alumni Association. Provide consultation to student organizations coordinating programs related to social justice and multicultural education.

Collaboration, Partnerships, and Campus Involvement Initiate new and supports on-going programming with various racial, cultural and ethnic student communities, including educating the majority student population to increase awareness and sensitivity to the needs of marginalized student communities at Duke.

Serve on recruiting and interviewing committees within the University as time allows. Serve on various university committees on behalf of CMA.

Marketing and Communications (20%)

  • Support the overall vision and execution of the marketing and communications effort;
  • Responsibilities may include creation of and weekly dissemination of the CMA newsletter;
  • Ensuring that the CMA listserv is current and that the newsletter content is reflective of an effective, efficient and engaging email newsletter for our audiences;
  • Support strengthening the presence and influence of student organizations’ events educating the community;
  • Support creating visual platforms (photography, videos, etc that help create compelling narratives re : CMA’s mission.

Professional Development (15%)

  • Supervision Supervises and guides the Center’s graduate and undergraduate student staff team on building and executing student-led initiatives on multicultural awareness, community building, and identity formation.
  • Training & Presentations Assist with campus programming; participate in divisional, state, regional, and national professional training opportunities : Keep abreast of latest knowledge and research in multicultural education, community engagement, and leadership development.

Attend training and conducts presentations at regional and national professional organizations, e.g., National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher

Education, and North Carolina Diversity and Inclusion Partners.

General Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least three years’ experience in program administration, higher education
  • Preferred three years’ experience in multicultural affairs, community engagement, and leadership development.

Specific Skills and Competencies

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • High level planning and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with social media.
  • Expertise in delivering program and education services to diverse population
  • Ability to acknowledge, affirm and advocate for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
  • Sense of humor

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires two years experience in personnel, college or OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support.
