Town Attorney

Overview

The award-winning and vibrant university town of Chapel Hill (population 63,764) is conducting a national search for an experienced Town Attorney. This executive role provides legal counsel and representation to the Mayor, Town Council, Town Manager, and various departments, boards, and commissions on a wide range of legal matters. The Town Attorney reports directly to the Mayor and Town Council. The Town Attorney's Office provides legal counsel to the Town Council, Town Manager, departments, and advisory boards.

Responsibilities

• Preparing and reviewing legal documents;
• Representing the Town in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings;
• Attending Council and advisory board meetings;
• Communicating complex legal concepts in clear, accessible language; and
• Leading and mentoring legal staff, including an Assistant Town Attorney and administrative support, and collaborating with the Police Attorney.
