We currently have an opening for a Research Technician I in the lab of Dr. Cagla Eroglu at Duke University. The Eroglu Lab investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie synaptic connectivity in the CNS.

Currently, they are continuing to understand the function of astrocyte-neuron communication in the normal mammalian brain.

Moreover, they are testing how problems in astrocyte-neuron communication contribute to the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders and degeneration.

About the Role :

What You'll Do :

Perform a variety of technical duties to investigate astrocyte morphogenesis and synaptogenesis in the developing and aging mouse and rat brain, including tissue culture, immunocytochemistry, viral-based techniques, microscopy, imaging, image analysis, and PCR.

Generation and maintenance of primary rat and mouse neuron and astrocyte cultures, including isolation, plating, feeding, and sterile reagent preparation.

Support the maintenance of mouse and rat colonies including setting up breeding, weaning and genotyping.

The candidate will be expected to document procedures and collect data in an organized and complete fashion following the laboratory SOP.

Tissue processing for histology, and quantitation of various markers.

Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs, and reports.

Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions. Review literature as needed to build essential knowledge of the lab's scientific area of focus.

Laboratory maintenance duties such as assisting with maintaining reagent and equipment inventories.

What You Bring :

A bachelor's degree in biology, neurobiology, or related fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience

A passion for science, and for the work of the lab

Comfort with working with animal models

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail. Ability to use good judgment in managing deadlines and responding to inquiries.

Strong enthusiasm to learn new techniques and expand your scientific knowledge.

Experience with live mouse handling a strong plus, but not required

Physical Requirements :

  • Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s);
  • dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters;

ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.

Compensation Range

$16.11 (minimum) - $20.14 (midpoint) - $26.15 (maximum)

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers.

Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
