About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) :

The Indiana Department of Revenue team is comprised of over 700 staff that are located in 13 locations across the state of Indiana.

We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor's office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and a variety of tax program participants to administer Indiana's tax laws.

DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws in a fair, secure, and efficient manner.

Salary :

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview :

The Accountant works in the DOR Accounting Operations group to resolve tax payments. You will complete complex system-to-system and material balance sheet account reconciliations.

You will also reconfigure existing accounts to simplify the process of reconciliations. The Accountant reports to the Accounting Operations Supervisor.

Key outcomes for this role are :

  • Ensure daily revenues received are processed into PeopleSoft timely and accurately.
  • Account analysis is completed to ensure proper application of revenue to the State’s funds / accounts.
  • Work procedures are current and updated regularly.

A Day in the Life :

The essential functions of this role are as follows :

  • Records all revenue receipts and posts daily Report of Collection entries into PeopleSoft / ENCOMPASS Financials.
  • Performs key validations and internal control functions to ensure tax revenue of $20+Billion is recorded accurately and timely.
  • Completes system-to-system transaction level reconciliations between taxpayer systems, the general ledger, and sub-ledgers.
  • Research accounting discrepancies, determine the most appropriate methods to correct discrepancies, and initiate journal entries to normalize the account.
  • Reconcile and process distribution of revenues to other state agencies, counties, and localities.
  • Actively contribute to developing, implementing, and managing process improvement projects throughout the project life cycle including requirements definition, design, development, user acceptance testing, and deployment phases
  • Perform maintenance of the internal systems Chart of Accounts , including account setup, certification, and periodic reviews.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed operational procedures and system workflows.
  • Prepare routine and ad hoc management reporting trend and variance analysis useful for timely alerting and correcting processing errors or significant operational changes / issues.
  • Perform other related duties and functions as part of the Accounting Operations team by undertaking special or priority projects as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success :

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment :

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and at least five (5) years of accounting experience.
  • Ability to formulate sound recommendations and make appropriate decisions while considering potential impact on operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with higher levels of management on accounting issues.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and high standards of integrity.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks and be flexible with changing priorities and processes.
  • Ability to interpret questions correctly and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to formulate, implement, and remediate key controls.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize time-sensitive daily tasks and activities.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve relatively complex accounting problems.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with staff at all levels within DOR and other state agencies.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, learn, and function well under widely different situations and circumstances.
  • Knowledge of current and changing State and Federal tax laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of government and state accounting standards
  • Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access) skills.
  • Knowledge of VBA and SQL queries will be an advantage.
  • Strong team player, customer service, and interpersonal skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports :

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
