Geotechnical Engineer
Job Summary
In this role, you will conduct field investigations and plan specifications for project geotechnical design. You will oversee the field and laboratory, conduct studies, and interpret regulations.
You will participate in new business efforts and proposal preparation including identifying client needs and developing cost estimates.
Your expertise will help ensure geotechnical project aspects meet project requirements.
Major Responsibilities :
- Evaluates, selects, and applies standard geotechnical engineering methods preparing specifications for subsurface investigations for new and existing facilities
- Provides oversight of geotechnical analyses such as stability of soil and rock slopes, rock excavation and slope protection, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, lateral earth pressures, and axial and lateral pile capacities
- Coordinates civil or structural engineering designs with geotechnical assessments
- Conducts review of geotechnical interpretative reports and works with geotechnical consultants to produce high quality co-coordinated submissions
- Assists with and advises on earthwork operations, inspection of earthworks and monitoring of ground improvement during the construction phase of projects
- Oversees outside geotechnical consultants hired by Bechtel or the client to perform these tasks
- Provides input to reports and may provide technical assistance to other geotechnical personnel
- Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project requirements related to addressing issues as they arise during project execution
Education and Experience Requirements :
Requires an M.S. degree in geotechnical engineering from an accredited university and a minimum of 8 years of progressive related experience, or a Ph.
D. degree in geotechnical engineering and a minimum of 6 years of progressive related experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills :
- Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Advanced competency related to the application of geotechnical engineering design principles.
- Familiar with computer applications such as Plaxis 2D and 3D, LPILE, APILE, SHAFT, GROUP, SLOPE / W, SEEP / W, GRLWEEP, CAPWAP, Settle3D, and DYNA6.
- Excellence verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use engineering and office automation tools effectively.
- Professional Engineer in the U.S. (geotechnical or civil engineering).
- Advanced competency related to site and subsurface investigations, development of engineering properties of soil and rock, foundation design and analysis, foundation analysis under dynamic loads, and earthworks.
