Patton State Hospital Human Resources is accepting applications for at least one (1) Permanent, Full-time, Staff Mental Health Specialist (Vocational Services). The position will be responsible for providing leadership and assistance in developing new programs serving mentally disabled, mentally disordered offenders, and judicially committed patients for integration back into the community. As the Staff Mental Health Specialist, the person will work under the direct supervision of the Program Assistance of Enhancement Services, Education. He or she will work closely with clinical program(s), treatment teams / clinicians, and local community college on selecting and enrolling patients as appropriate into college courses. Additionally, the SMHS will provide vocational groups to patients that will focus on developing jobs skills. The position is crucial for the facility to continue to provide the Distance Learning Program to mentally disordered and judicially committed patients within the confines of a safe, structured, and secure environment. This will be crucial to prepare patients towards discharge to community living and to reach the optimal quality of life during their continued stay a DSH-Patton.
The successful candidates shall be extremely familiar and proficient in the usage of common office computer applications such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. In addition, the candidates must be able to perform policy analysis, revise existing policies, and draft new policies and procedures, track service usage and monitor contract service performance as needed. Other abilities required includes maintaining effective communication with those coming into contact, reaching out to others, and analyzing situations accurately and taking effective action. The ability to design, develop, and implement vocational educational curriculums based on performed assessments and evaluations, monitor, review, and evaluate patient treatment outcomes are a must. Desired qualities include emotional stability, confidence, patience, tolerance, flexibility, tact, attention to details, ability to maintain organization, willingness to be a team player, orientation to customer services, and ability to manage large workload with short notice and tight timeframe. Candidates should be collaborative team players and evidence solid clinical judgment and professional boundaries with patients and co-workers. A desirable candidate will be known for personal initiative, independent functioning, and a strong work ethic.
In addition, the qualified person must be a clear and direct communicator, possess excellent writing skills for report writing. Other desired qualities include being patient-oriented, ability to maintain confidentiality, awareness of safety / security, flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a large and varying caseload.

Working Conditions
Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.
