Office Engineer – Railway Signaling & Electrical
Advanced Railway Innovations | El Cajon, CA | Full-time, on-site with regular job site visits
$70,000–$90,000 per year, based on experience

About the role
Advanced Railway Innovations is a small electrical and railway signaling contractor. We deliver signal, grade crossing, and wayside systems for freight, transit, and commuter rail clients, and our electrical division does residential and commercial work in both the private and public sectors. We’re hiring an Office Engineer to keep our projects organized, documented, and moving, from submittals and RFIs to schedules, drawings, and closeout.


This is a hands-on role on a tight-knit team. You’ll work directly with project managers, field foremen, and client engineers, and you’ll see how every project comes together from bid to final acceptance.


What you'll do

• Review submittals against project drawings and specifications, flag discrepancies, and manage the submittal, RFI, and transmittal process from preparation through approval
• Build preliminary project schedules, then track progress, material deliveries, and long-lead equipment (signal houses, cases, gates, cable)
• Serve as a main point of contact for project communications with clients, railroads, subcontractors, and suppliers
• Maintain drawing sets and revisions, including signal plans, circuit plans, and as-builts
• Run document control and file organization across all active jobs
• Support quantity takeoffs, estimates, and bid preparation
• Help prepare pay applications, change order requests, and cost tracking
• Assemble test and inspection records, QA/QC documentation, and closeout packages
• Track safety documentation, roadway worker protection records, and crew qualifications
• Visit job sites as needed to verify field conditions and support the field team

What you bring


Required

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, or construction engineering, construction management, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• 0–3 years of experience in construction, engineering, or a project support role
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and specifications
• Strong organization and attention to detail; you keep track of many moving pieces
• Clear written and verbal communication
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, and Bluebeam or a similar PDF markup tool
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites

Nice to have

• Experience with railway signaling, grade crossings, train control, or transit systems
• Familiarity with AREMA standards or FRA regulations
• Scheduling experience with Primavera P6 or MS Project
• AutoCAD or MicroStation experience
• Exposure to Procore or similar project management software
• Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) or railroad contractor safety training

Working conditions
Mostly office-based, with regular visits to active job sites, including railroad right-of-way. Required PPE and safety training are provided.
